Introduction


Phantom Works is the applied technology development division of The Boeing Company. We operate with agility and speed, creating new capability through modelling, simulation and prototyping. We work on exciting fast-paced projects and are responsible for delivering next generation prototypes of future Boeing products and services.



Boeing Phantom Works Global is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to lead our growing Software Engineering team in Fleet, reporting to the UK Senior Manager.



You will work within an interdisciplinary group of Software Engineers, Systems Engineers and Military Operations Analysts to spearhead the modelling and simulation of advanced future concepts and development of next-generation autonomous platforms. This will range from early concept definition through to developing final software solutions and products, working alongside analysts and a range of Defence and Government customers.



Responsibilities



  • Lead and direct the technical activities of the Software Engineering team


  • Work effectively within an agile development environment and as part of wider multi-disciplinary team, flexing your involvement beyond your familiar areas of expertise


  • Ensure quality and configuration control of the team’s deliverables. Manage our software toolsets and licenses to ensure consistently high performance


  • Maintain your technical edge. Interpret mathematical and physics-based engineering concepts and guide the team to implement as software models and algorithms in proprietary simulation environments


  • Plan, manage and account for your time and the team’s time. Anticipate issues which might affect the team’s delivery progress and proactively address these. Lead project and sprint planning sessions


  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders at all levels of our business, customer organisations and supply partners. Moderate domestic travel and some international travel is required


  • Share and clearly articulate complex software concepts with peers and non-engineering colleagues, such that others can easily understand, build and evolve your ideas collaboratively. Write project documentation to a high standard in English. Produce and confidently deliver impactful presentations to internal and external audiences


  • Drive your career development proactively as part of a supportive review and feedback process. Identify and undertake learning and development opportunities and actively manage a professional development plan


  • Provide input into team strategy discussions, taking shared responsibility for the team’s growth, capability development, and success. Spearhead continuous improvement of our team’s processes and enhancement of our toolsets


  • Mentor our highly-talented Software Engineers, being a role model and demonstrating Continuous Professional Development.




Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or similarly related degree




Preferred Qualifications:



  • Recent experience in a Software technical leadership role


  • Experience in leading software development cycles using agile methodologies with DevOps processes and toolchains (e.g. Atlassian suite, GitLab, or equivalent)


  • At least 10 years’ experience in programming and software design with knowledge of modern C++ principles, practice, frameworks and libraries


  • Proficient in other languages such as Javascript, Python or experience using Unreal Engine


  • Experience in software requirements analysis, functional analysis, software design and development, and software integration and test


  • Support Verification and Validation and testing activities


  • Experience using both Windows and Linux operating systems





Schedule


Full-time (37.5 hours, Monday to Friday). More time in office than remote is required.
