DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW About the Disability Resource Center (DRC) The Disability Resource Center (DRC) leads UC Santa Cruz in providing educational equity and a welcoming environment for students with disabilities. The DRC identifies legally mandated accommodations that address disabling barriers and work with faculty and students to remove or mitigate various barriers. The DRC educates campus stakeholders on disability diversity and equal educational access. The team ensures compliance with State, Federal and local laws and ensures compliance with UC policies. About the Division The UC Santa Cruz Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 3 major units and 21 departments. The division provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs, activities, and initiatives. DSAS also does our work through a range of resource centers dedicated to providing direct student support. The division's work is grounded in educational equity, institutional responsibility, and an unfettered commitment to supporting the whole student. About Student Success and Equity (SSE) The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio of departments is a branch of DSAS focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 90 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations. More information can be found at: https://drc.ucsc.edu JOB SUMMARY Reporting to the Assistant Director of Auxiliary Services at the Disability Resources Center (DRC), the DRC Accessible Media Coordinator is the recognized subject matter expert in alternative formats and accessible technologies. This individual oversees the Accessible Media Unit, which encompasses the DRC Inclusive Computing and Technology (ICAT) Lab, Alternative Format Remediations, and Assistive Technology. The role involves acting as the key liaison for digital accessibility across all academic departments, alongside offering training and resources to faculty, staff, and students as needed. Leveraging extensive experience and expertise in disability services, the Coordinator is responsible for procuring and developing various formats of instructional materials, as well as modifying existing content to ensure accessibility. For intricate adaptations (such as Braille, tactile graphics, or STEM-based materials), the Coordinator works closely with department leaders to identify the most effective conversion strategies. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for managing the deployment of assistive technology for student use and plays a crucial role in ensuring the University's adherence to both federal and state disability laws and regulations, as well as University policies. APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Budgeted Salary: $74,000 - $80,300 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Maintains regular contact with academic division/department staff and faculty. Actively supports the ADA interactive process. Actively communicates and collaborates with necessary campus partners. Consults regularly with DRC Staff to ensure accommodation compliance and effective communication. Elevates issues to leadership that are outside of the scope of the position's judgment and authority. Conducts regular training sessions for all student staff on required and related DRC accommodations, ADA, and other compliance issues and reporting, and maintaining academic integrity. Identifies providers who can supply texts and instructional materials. Identifies and contracts as needed with vendors to outsource work that cannot be completed in-house (Braille, tactile graphics). Collaborates with the Business Manager on the vendor engagement process. Advises the DRC Leadership team to ensure that students are supported in their use of accessible materials and that faculty are well informed about helping to ensure that materials are usable, accessible and available in a timely manner. Conducts assessment meetings with students approved to receive alternate format materials to recommend formats and assistive tech tools for reading. Determines if additional editing or formatting is needed - based on student needs and/or complex materials. Works closely with the Service Coordinators who make referrals to the Alt Media unit. Meets with DRC students to assess and determine appropriate alternate format and assistive technology. Provides one-on-one training for students on how to use assistive technology and create accessible formats. 25% - Campus Liaison Works closely with faculty and ITS to ensure access to the learning management system, to the archives of instructional videos, and to other course materials, to ensure students with disabilities will receive and utilize accessible materials, texts, and online materials promptly. Develops protocol and workflow processes to facilitate collaboration with faculty and the DRC. Develops a communication plan for communicating with faculty, staff, and students throughout the academic year. Provides educational training to faculty and staff to ensure their educational content and course materials are accessible. Consults on accessible media and assistive technology needs with professors, including last-minute adjustments for students with temporary accommodations keeping appropriate DRC Staff in the communication loop. Offers guidance and instruction regarding accessible techniques to ensure equal access for DRC students. Troubleshoots issues for faculty, students, and staff related to accessible media and assistive technology accommodations. Troubleshoots any problems regarding accommodated course materials and assistive technology, and document any notable interactions and case files. 15% - Resource Management and Supervision Oversees the Inclusive Computing and Technology (ICAT) Lab. As needed, oversees a small group of student employees assisting with file remediation and student assistive technology demos. Responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training student employees when business needs demand. Ensures the teams are adequately trained and updated, to produce materials, provide demos of assistive technology and can respond to student questions. Tracks production and procurement of materials for periodic and annual analysis to review for process improvements. Utilizing data from past quarters, plans and revises staffing, workflow and processes to achieve shorter times for completion. Conducts ongoing research on new products, workflow and best practices in the field. Updates technology and software licenses as needed. Develops budget proposals for new hardware and software. Gathers benchmark data from other campuses in the UC system and from similar colleges. Compiles data and assists in the completion of reports. Provides quarterly analysis for alternative format and assistive technology services to identify concerns, patterns and tendencies to provide optimal service and make updates in policies and procedures based on data. 10% - Auxiliary Service Accommodations Support & Other Assists in managing accommodation requests for other Auxiliary Services units to effectively manage DRC resources. Acts as backup in absence of primary coordinator of other Auxiliary Services. Performs other duties, as assigned, as needed to support the DRC's Mission and goals. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Strong knowledge of the legal framework involving the provision of auxiliary aids and accessible materials for students with disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations. Thorough knowledge of procedures for assessing and determining the provision of accessible materials including the Disability Compliance Office procedures to ensure that materials are accurate, usable, and timely. Thorough knowledge of the assessment of student's needs and delivery of accessible materials for individuals with conditions that impact reading, vision, comprehension, or mobility. Experience with conversion and delivery of text into alternate accessible formats. Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills to positively interact with students, faculty, staff, and vendors concerning access accommodations. 2-3 years experience working in education or social service-oriented office environments. Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding, high volume and compliance-oriented environment, and work independently and respond to requests in a timely manner. Thorough knowledge of computer applications, office systems and administrative procedures, and ability to operate office equipment. Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential materials and matters, and determine when to escalate matters to appropriate resources. Ability to apply good judgment in resource management. Exceptional attention to detail. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Demonstrated supervisory and training skills. Experience serving students with disabilities. Strong technology knowledge, skills, and fluency in using hardware and software. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Assistive Technology Certification - RESNA or similar training Familiarity with university and DRC systems (i.e. Canvas, Accessible Information Management). Experience with public speaking or presenting workshops. Past experience working in a Disability Resource Center. SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check. Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation. Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
