Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference? The Rockport Police Department is seeking TCOLE licensed peace officers to join our team and provide outstanding service to our citizens. The City of Rockport is a vibrant coastal community with a booming tourist population during the summer and holidays. Each day when you hang up your gear, you are only minutes from a spectacular beach and outstanding fishing. 


The City of Rockport currently covers employee medical benefits with available options for spouses and dependents. Officers are eligible for immediate degree AND certification pay along with longevity incentive pay after your first full year of employment. Lateral transfers are available with officers receiving 1/2 year credit for each year of full-time officer experience, up to 15 years. Our patrol fleet is comprised of Chevrolet Tahoe's and we currently have specialized bicycle and marine units.  


 


MAJOR DUTIES



  • Patrols the city to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations and to provide assistance as needed; monitors commercial and residential areas for signs of criminal activity.

  • Enforces traffic and parking laws through the issuance of citations and warnings; inspects roadways, bridges, and traffic signal and signs to identify and report hazardous conditions.

  • Performs business and residential security checks; checks doors, windows, gages and fences; reports unsecured property.

  • Responds to calls relayed by communications officers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, public service requests, stranded motorists, and others.

  • Conducts preliminary investigations into traffic accidents and other incidents, including interviewing victims, complainants and witnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing crime scenes.

  • Apprehends, arrests, and processes offenders, including fugitives; subpoenas witnesses.

  • Maintains traffic control through observation and use of speed detection devices; tests and detains drivers suspected of DUI; issues traffic citations; participates in the department's selective enforcement details.

  • Provides traffic direction as needed for parades, funerals, and sporting events.

  • Provides assistance and backup support to other officers and emergency service providers as necessary.

  • Testifies in judicial proceedings as necessary.

  • Completes all required reports and forms, including accident and incident reports.

  • Inspects and maintains assigned patrol car, uniform, and equipment.

  • Prepares criminal and search warrants, complaints, and affidavits; serves criminal and court-related paperwork.

  • At times may perform duties as municipal court bailiff including court security, witness coordination, warrant and subpoena service, and other related duties at the direction of the municipal court judge.

  • Performs related duties.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

  • Successful completion of a certified police academy. Prior experience and/or training of one to two years preferred but not required.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

  • Possession of a TCOLE Basic Peace Officer Certification.

  • Minimum of 21 years of age on date of employment.

  • Good character and reputation; and meets all TCOLE requirements for licensing regardless of license status.

  • If applicable, discharge from military service must be under honorable conditions.

The City of Rockport is a vibrant coastal town in South Texas with a fluid population due to tourism. The Rockport-Fulton area is known for it's incredible scenery along with a fantastic beach and impressive fishing. Multiple festivals and annual events are hosted in Rockport each year and you can find Rockport on many top US destination lists for both living and vacationing. While an internet search of Rockport may yield national articles and photography, we still have a small town atmosphere. 

The Rockport Police Department is comprised of three divisions with 27 sworn officer positions and 4 civilian positions. The Administration Division, the Criminal Investigations Division, and the Patrol Division.

Administration houses the Office of the Chief, the Records Department, Code Enforcement and Property and Evidence. Administration is comprised of the Chief of Police, the Administrative Lieutenant, the Administrative Officer and 3 civilian employees.

Patrol provides 24hr coverage to the community of Rockport responding to calls for service and actively patrolling within the Rockport City Limits. The Patrol division is comprised of the Patrol Captain, 4 Patrol Lieutenants, and 14 Patrol Officers. 

Criminal Investigations gathers, seeks and collects case specific evidence to identify and apprehend reported criminal offenders. The Criminal Investigation division is comprised of the Investigations Captain, 4 Detectives, 1 Warrant Officer, and 1 civilian.
