Summary

This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service. The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. HII Mission Technologies (HII-MT) Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with HII-MT.

For this internship, the SkillBridge intern will train as a Network Engineer within the HII Mission Technologies, reporting to a designated HII Mission Technologies Supervisor, with the goal of learning network engineering principles, technologies, and core device functions, as well as the roles and responsibilities of working in a Network Operations Center environment. The intern will be assigned special projects as needed.

Desired End State (3-4month target)
At the end of four months, the intern will be able to describe core functions of network devices, have a basic knowledge of network engineering technologies, architectures and topologies, describe basic roles and responsibilities of network engineers both for engineering and operations of the network, gain knowledge on tools and techniques for monitoring network health.
The intern will develop a basic understanding of all network equipment, configurations, operation, and troubleshooting concepts and procedures.
The intern will increase their understanding of network security.
The intern will develop a basic understanding of different types of transport services and technologies.
The intern will develop an understanding of technical documentation and project management.
HII Mission Technologies will benefit from the military background of the SkillBridge intern and considers the SkillBridge internship an overall positive experience.

Assumptions
If candidate is selected and approved, SkillBridge Intern can travel in conjunction with this internship; HII Mission Technologies will fund all travel costs.

Program of Instruction

TRAINING LOCATION: Ramstein Airbase, Germany

Training Plan

Phase 1 - Basics

  • Week 1: In processing, Introductions/office familiarization
  • Week 2: Intro to Network Topologies, Architectures, and Network Engineering Concepts, including media types
  • Week 3: Intro to Network Security Devices (Firewalls, IPS, IDS, wIDS, VPN), Concepts, and Cryptographic Devices
  • Week 4: Intro to Network Monitoring and Management Tools and technologies (SNMP, Paragon Insights, GEM One, Netbox IPAM)
  • Week 5: Intro to Juniper Paragon Path Finder and network automation
Phase 2 - Systems Operation
  • Week 6: Network Switching Concepts and Protocols and equipment configuration and operation
  • Week 7: Network Routing Concepts and Protocols and equipment configuration and operation
  • Week 8: Network Security Device Concepts and configuration, including Cryptographic devices and VPN
  • Week 9: Network monitor tools and technologies including SNMP, NetFlow, IP SLA, Syslogs or system logs, as well as environmental issues and concerns such as Power (UPS, PDU), temperature, and hardened systems

Phase 3 - Troubleshooting & Maintenance
  • Week 10: Physical, Access, and Network Layer troubleshooting
  • Week 11: Network security troubleshooting & tools (Firewalls, WireShark, Syslogs, etc...)
  • Week 12: Netbox administration and training

Additional Goals
  • Introduction to a Data Center Environment
  • Introduction to a Network Operation Center (NOC) Environment
  • Introduction to Wide Area Network Technologies and Circuit Types and working with Service Providers
  • IP Address Management
  • Development of Technical Documentation for Network Engineering
  • Installation planning for new network nodes and conducting site surveys
  • Project Management


Minimum Qualifications

Active-Duty Military ONLY within final 180 days of active-duty service. Applications will be accepted within final 12 months of active-duty service. Education and Experience dependent on Program of Instruction.
  • Must have SECRET security clearance
  • To qualify for an entry level position, SEC+ and CCNA certifications are required. 90-day certification window may be approved on a case-by-case basis.


Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in IT or CS related field, with 4+ years of related experience
  • TS/SCI security clearance
  • CompTIA Network+
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • CompTIA Security+
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  • CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+)
