Risk Management & Safety at Auburn University is excited to begin the search for a Laboratory and Research Safety Specialist!
Supporting Laboratory and Research Safety Programs, this position's essential functions include, but are not limited to assisting in development and implementation of safety and health programs as they relate to general laboratory safety, biological safety, chemical safety, supports AU research and academic programs that use radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance. Other functions include providing technical assistance, training, support to faculty and staff, and providing professional expertise in the operation of Auburn University environmental, safety and health programs to help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, national consensus standards and the Auburn University Safety Policies.

Essential Functions
- Provide technical consultation to faculty, students, and staff on laboratory and research safety.
- Conduct laboratory safety inspections to identify safety hazards, risks, and recommend control measures to reduce or eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in laboratories.
- Support implementation of the laser safety program.
- Provide compliance assistance with state and federal guidelines / regulations.
- Design, coordinate, and deliver safety training in a variety of formats.
- Assist with a variety of laboratory safety functions in the broad areas of biological safety, chemical safety, laboratory ventilation and radiation safety.
- Assist with management of radiological waste, calibration of radiological survey instruments and other radiation safety related tasks as needed.
- Manage computerized databases and safety tracking systems as needed.

Degree in Environmental Science, Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Chemistry or a related field

- High School/GED plus8 years of experience OR
- Bachelor's degree plus 0 years of experience

- High School/GED plus 10 years of experience OR
- Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of experience OR
- Master's degree plus 0 years of experience
Level III
- High School/GED plus 12 years of experience OR
- Bachelor's degree plus 4 years of experience OR
- Master's degree plus 2 years of experience
Scope of experience: Experience in health and safety regulatory compliance enforcement
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications
Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Competency with computer use and database functions, including data entry, troubleshooting, and end-user support.
- A strong work ethic exhibiting a professional demeanor and self-motivation.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team are also required.
Minimum Technology Skills
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access etc.,)

Desired Qualifications
- Practical experience working in a research environment and/or implementing health and safety programs in academic settings is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a physical science.
- Ability to understand or learn complex technical procedures or processes.
- Experience in or knowledge of research safety practices to control chemical and physical hazards associated with working with hazardous materials.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally.
- Ability to work independently or in a team to interpret policies and procedures to solve unusual and/or difficult problems.
- Experience creating classroom and online training presentations, and teaching/training various size groups.

Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899 the name again was changed, to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name of the school was changed to Auburn University, a title more in keeping with its location, and expressing the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university.
Today, Auburn is one of the few universities to carry the torch as a land, sea and space grant university. Our fall 2014 semester enrollment was 25,912. Our students can choose from more than 140 degree options in 13 schools and colleges at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.
