Assistant Professor of Data Science | University of Northern Iowa - Military Veterans

The University of Northern Iowas College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences seeks applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in Data Science, starting in August 2025. The tenure home will be in either Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics, as appropriate for the candidate.

It is expected that the person in this position will be mentored toward directing a Data Science Hub. Initially, the responsibilities of the position will include teaching and curriculum development in data science and/or the faculty members home discipline (60%), and research that focuses on applications of Data Science in STEM fields that are relevant to the candidate (25%). The service load for this position (15%) will primarily work toward the development of a Data Science Hub. After a successful third year review, the individual will take on a larger service load and lower teaching load as part of the transition to directing the data science hub.

The position offers opportunities to collaborate with faculty in STEM disciplines who use data science methods and techniques in their disciplinary scholarship/research. Faculty in the Departments of Applied Engineering & Technical Management, Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics have research interests that include bioinformatics, cheminformatics, computational protein structure prediction, computational biology, AI, machine learning, and computational physics, all areas intersecting data science that are potentially fertile ground for collaboration. UNI is a partner institution on a state-wide NSF EPSCoR grant that includes data science faculty and staff from UNI, University of Iowa, and Iowa State University. UNI provides excellent opportunities for research including a multi-CPU and multi-GPU high-performance computing system as well as access to data generated by our faculty in their scholarly pursuits.
