Director, Investment Accounting - Military Veterans

This role will report directly to the Head of Investment Accounting and will be responsible for leading projects to improve the efficiency of processes, the quality of financial reporting, and the control environment preparation and oversight of management reporting as well as the forecasting of net investment income.

It is important to understand the fundamentals of investment accounting and reporting requirements, with an ability and interest to lead complex tasks while continuously building your skills and knowledge.

You will


  • Develop continuous process improvement strategy which includes automation and the implementation of innovative technology, processes, and reporting.


  • Actively participate in the development of the Oracle OAC data warehouse and FAW Dashboards which will eventually contain invested asset data from all sources.


  • Direct the reporting for all investment-related activities.


  • Collaborate with investment managers to ensure accurate and clear financial reporting.


  • Play a lead supporting role in the preparation and maintenance of investment analysis for Senior Management and the Investments team.


  • Function as a liaison between third party asset managers and the Guardian investment accounting team.


  • Ensure asset class alignment for AUM billing purposes.


  • Track trade activity on a daily/monthly/quarterly basis. Review any deviation from SAA and work with the asset managers to get a story behind why deviations occur.


  • Create/model AUM projections to forecast future management fees.


  • Ensure asset managers are in tune with the NII forecast model and are actively working towards achieving set targets.


  • Ensure that asset managers are operating within RBC risk limits and are aware of risk implications.


  • Make sure asset managers are in tune with any upcoming contributions (cash inflow) vs distributions (cash outflows).



You are

  • An analytical thinker, with the ability to "connect the dots" across the organization.

  • Someone who is purposeful and able to execute tasks efficiently.


  • Assists the NII forecasting team in model improvements and investment assumption gathering.


  • Assist with investment dashboard/KPI buildout.


  • Management reporting as it pertains to asset manager performance.


  • Broad and deep knowledge of complex investments. (i.e., derivatives, structured securities, and private placements)


  • Experience with life insurance, annuity products and/or reinsurance is a plus.


  • Partner with stakeholders to drive process automation and to foster an environment of continuous process improvements.


  • Act as primary liaison with other partners of the organization including investments, risk, and FP&A.


  • Prepare Earnings Review Deck discussing investment performance, accounting issues, accounting risks and opportunities with respect to the investment portfolio. Candidate should proactively recognize issues and recommend solutions.


  • Work with asset managers to understand if there are any potential upcoming impairments.


  • Track value add though yield uplift generated by tactical trading activity.



You have

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in accounting/finance.


  • 10 plus years of investment experience.


  • Strong Life insurance (STAT & GAAP) background.


  • CPA or CFA a plus


  • Possess self-confidence and ability to communicate with Senior Management Levels.


  • Strong organizational skills and an aptitude for detail and ability to multitask and problem-solve under pressure.


  • Ability to coordinate with the staff to meet deadlines.


  • Knowledge of Insurance industry accounting practices and procedures preferred.


  • Strong proficiency with MS Office applications, including Excel, Word, SmartView and Essbase and knowledge of Oracle database application a plus.



Location /Travel

Hybrid role: In office 2 days, WFH 3 days. Preferred location - Hudson Yards, NYC or Stamford CT

Salary Range
$126,970.00 - $208,600.00

The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
