Sharma Lab: Junior Research Specialist Position overview Position title: Sharma Lab: Junior Research Specialist Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. 'Off-scale salaries', i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100-56,600. Percent time: Full-time (100%) Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding. Position Description The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Junior Research Specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Upasna Sharma, the Research Specialist will contribute to a research program focused on studying transgenerational inheritance of environmental effects. The specialist will be specifically involved in the project studying sperm epigenome and influence of environmental exposures on sperm epigenome. Duties will include performing mouse husbandry (including mouse breeding, genotyping, and maintenance of the colony) and conducting experiments using basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, qRT-PCRs, cloning, recombinant nucleic acid expression, mammalian cell culturing, and general maintenance of the lab. The selected candidate will be expected to stay current with the scientific literature in the field and contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals. This position will require excellent organizational skills and the ability to successfully work as a member of a diverse, interdisciplinary research team. Applicants with expertise in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: Experience with mouse husbandry, colony maintenance, and genotyping . Experience with mouse dissections, tissue dissections, and staining. Molecular biology techniques including PCR, qPCR, cloning, cell culturing and manipulations. Successful candidates will have a background in male reproductive biology and experience with sperm isolation and analysis. A minimum of one year of post-baccalaureate research experience working with mice in a research or clinical laboratory. Evidence of training in basic molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to nucleic acid isolation and quantification and recombinant DNA techniques.
