Development Communications Coordinator | Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - Military Veterans

Job Summary Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is currently seeking a Communications Coordinator to join the Development Department. Reporting to the Director of Advancement Operations and Stewardship, the Development Communications Coordinator will partner broadly with fundraising, scientific, and technical staff to generate written communications materials to advance fundraising strategies at WHOI. The Coordinator will take the lead on generating donor-facing materials including funding proposals and annual, stewardship, and impact reports, as well as support for executive communications including personal correspondence and presentations. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position and is eligible for benefits. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Produce high-quality, inspiring, custom communication pieces to support gift proposals and solicitations with a focus on those at the six-figure and seven-figure levels. Develop a deep understanding of stewardship reporting needs and capacity, taking the lead on reporting for individual grant-makers such as foundations, as well as populations of supporters in the form of the President's and Annual Reports. Research, interview sources, write, design, and edit proposals, vision statements, impact reports and stories, and other materials that articulate the case for or impact of philanthropy to WHOI. Partner with and maintain relationships with frontline fundraisers and scientific and technical staff, translating scientific complexity into compelling cases and narratives to deepen the relationship between supporters and scientists. Update and maintain the development portions of the website. Collaborate with colleagues on fundraising appeals and campaigns (examples: direct mail appeals, planned giving brochures, presentation slide decks, etc.). Manage production of various communication products at the same time; coordinate reviews by various stakeholders and incorporate feedback. Track schedules, adhere to deadlines, and maintain accurate records of files. Provide high-level support for executive communications including for the Vice President of Advancement & Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Development Officer, and others; produce engaging and effective communications personalized to individual voices. Provide strategic communications support as necessary, including for annual fund marketing campaigns, as well as research for prospects/donors and new projects and initiatives at WHOI. Conduct research on an as-needed basis to support fundraising efforts. Non-Essential Functions: Performs other duties as deemed necessary. Education & Experience Bachelor's degree required. 3 years of professional writing experience required. 5 years of experience preferred. Professional, persuasive writing and editing experience in both long- and short-form content. Strong analytical and strategic thinking; ability to quickly grasp complex and technical information--especially about science--and synthesize into clear, accurate, and persuasive prose. Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail; excellent research skills and a resourceful approach. Project management skills and attention to detail; ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects. Ability to form and sustain strong working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in a complex environment. Previous experience writing for executive leadership a plus. Experience exercising good judgment and work with sensitive/confidential information with the utmost discretion at all times. Proficient in Office 365 applicaitons. Experience on a non-profit fundraising team preferred. Science writing experience preferred. Experience with Razor's Edge preferred. Physical Requirements Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to: occasional standing and/or walking along with being mostly and continuously sedentary. Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, and with others. Physical duties are subject to change.
