The College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for the position of Associate Director in the Learning/Maker Labs.

Job Overview

Oversee the administration and direction of DAAP Learning Labs: Rapid Prototyping, Photography and Digital Print Lab, Design Build Lab, Ceramics and Printmaking Lab. The position provides leadership, budgetary oversight, and operations of each lab. The position will work directly with faculty and students to develop procedures, protocols and strategic plans for investing in equipment and personnel in support of the academic mission of the college. Additionally, this position will participate in the development of a holistic, University-wide "maker" ecosystem with other labs across campus such as the CEAS labs, 1819 labs, and Digital Futures labs.

Essential Functions

  • Manage DAAP Learning Labs, responsible for development, implementation and administration of goals to achieve strategic priorities; assume management responsibility for a wide range of projects/tasks associated with the learning lab community
  • Formulate, recommend, and implement internal policies, procedures, controls, and manage processes to increase service levels and access for students; responsible for policy execution and results that enrich DAAP and the Learning Labs.
  • Develop, implement and monitor assigned budgets, authority for function budget, revenue and expense planning and approving expenditure. Lead the development of annual long-term planning of equipment, personnel and lab space utilization.
  • Develop and implement proposals to coordinate the future investment of DAAP Learning Labs with the broader "maker" community on campus.
  • Communicate and assist students, faculty and staff to resolve questions and complex issues; represent the DAAP internally and externally.
  • Provide direct supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff; hire, orient, train, mentor and evaluate assigned staff; monitor and coordinate staff development and training programs (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Minimum Requirements

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in design or art related discipline (Industrial Design, Architecture, Planning, Fine Arts, etc.), and Five (5) years of experience including supervision -or-

Nine (9) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Five (5) years related experience

Additional Qualifications Considered

• Applicant must have direct experience and skills in the processes and use of equipment in at least three of the following:
  • Digital Fabrication (3D Printing, laser/knife cutting, CNC milling)
  • Metal Working and foundry casting
  • Woodworking
  • Wet and digital photography processing
  • Digital printing and plotting
  • Ceramic making, glazing and firing
  • Printmaking: Intaglio, screenprint, etching and lithography

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.

  • Lifting - up to 50 pounds - Often
