Vice Chair for Research & Carole J. Bland Endowed Chair in Research - Family Medicine & Community Health - Military Veterans

Summary:

The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH) at the University of Minnesota seeks a senior level family medicine researcher to be Vice Chair for Research and the Carole J. Bland, Ph.D. Endowed Chair in Research. The DFMCH has a long history of successful research. Consistently ranked in the top 3 in the nation, DFMCH faculty researchers currently rank first in the nation among National Institutes of Health-funded family medicine departments.

The ideal candidate will have NIH-funded research experience related to family medicine in topics pertaining to healthcare delivery, health disparities, and/or population health.

Hire will be at tenured Associate, or Professor level depending upon qualifications. Candidates seeking the rank of Tenured Associate Professor or Tenured Professor must have an established academic track record commensurate with this rank and the ability to qualify for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Duties for the position include:

  • Oversee a top-3 NIH funded research division
  • Guide a research leadership team alongside division directors who oversee research on health disparities, healthcare delivery, and population health
  • Increase the stature and prominence of DFMCH research nationally
  • Increase departmental NIH funding
  • Increase other sources of funding
  • Partner with clinical and medical education faculty to harmonize research and scholarly efforts across all areas of the DFMCH
  • Promote increased collaboration within DFMCH, across the University, and nationally
  • Elevate the overall scholarly output of DFMCH faculty
  • Serve on the DFMCH executive leadership team
  • Partner with the department head in strategic planning, departmental management, and grooming of external departmental relationships
  • Collaborate with research leadership team, research faculty, and research staff to improve and align infrastructure to promote research growth
  • Mentor junior faculty and post-doctoral fellows
  • Identify and create new programs or initiatives to foster DFMCH research growth


Required Qualifications:
  • PhD or equivalent degree in a health, mental health/behavioral medicine, public health or related field and/or MD/DO with board certification in Family Medicine.
  • Established record of developing grant proposals and obtaining NIH and/or federal research funding.
  • Proven success in academic administrative leadership.
  • Experience mentoring graduate and/or medical students.
  • Experience with research methodology such as longitudinal study design, mixed-methods research, natural experiments, clinical trials, etc.
  • Evidence of success with publication of manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and presentations of results at conferences of importance to the field of the applicant.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Training in a public health field such as behavioral health, health disparities/health equity, nutrition, chronic disease, etc.
  • Experience as a principal or co-investigator developing grant proposals at a federal/national level with evidence of success at obtaining independent external research funding.
  • Strong quantitative and/or qualitative research methodology skills.
  • Experience in research focused on race/racism as a social determinant of health.
  • Experience developing community or clinic collaborations and community-engaged research.
  • Experience working collaboratively with team members to solve complex health problems through integrated approaches including research, policy/system, clinic and community efforts.
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills as demonstrated by clarity of presentation.
  • Evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by publications and/or awards recognizing scientific excellence.
  • Active clinical license in medicine, mental health/behavioral medicine, nutrition, pharmacy, or other field that can work in a primary care setting.

Physician applicants should have:

Required:
  • MD or DO Degree
  • Completion of a Family Medicine residency; board certified in specialty; licensed or eligible in Minnesota

Preferred:
  • Three or more years of practice experience beyond residency completion
  • One or more years of medical teaching experience
  • Experience in educational program and curriculum development and evaluation
  • Experience in scholarly activities and mentoring trainees in scholarly activities
