Position Title: Graphic Designer/Copywriter Location: Big Rapids (Main Campus) Department: 70600 - Publications Advertised Salary: $58,000-$62,000 FLSA: Exempt Temporary/Continuing: Continuing Part-Time/Full-Time: Full-Time Union Group: N/A Term of Position: 12 Month At Will/Just Cause: Just Cause Summary of Position: The Graphic Designer/Copywriter is responsible for layout, design and production of original marketing and advertising creative materials that create a consistent visual identity for Ferris State University marketing and branding strategies. These materials target both internal and external audiences, with an emphasis on external marketing projects for student recruitment, alumni relations, fundraising and general brand recognition. Other responsibilities include writing copy for advertising and marketing materials including, but not limited to: student recruitment and brand ads, brochures, newsletters, direct mail and webpages. Position Type: Staff Required Education: An associate degree in graphic design or related field Required Work Experience: At least one year of professional work experience as a print designer and a strong professional design portfolio. Required Licenses and Certifications: Physical Demands: Office Environment Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: Bachelors degree in graphic design, fine arts, advertising, marketing, public relations, or related field; dual proficiencies in graphic (print and interactive) AND writing, editing and proofreading copy for marketing/advertising initiatives for print, online and social media, and the ability to grasp how words and images can be used effectively to strengthen a piece and maximize its impact. Higher education experience is desirable. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Adaptable in designing small quick turnaround pieces, as well as more elaborate campaigns that have a series of interrelated materials. Creates compelling visual design for both print and online and understands production of both mediums. Knowledgeable about the principles and techniques of design, typography, illustration, photography, production, marketing, branding, writing, and editing. Designs and implements work of high visual and conceptual quality that is appropriate to content and intended audience and exists within the framework of the universitys overall visual identity. Prepares accurate and efficient design files to produce final electronic files for prepress and printing. Prepares quote specifications for printers and maintains regular communication with them to ensure materials are printed correctly and timely to meet deadlines. Adheres to agreed-upon project management plan, including delivery schedules and budgetary considerations. Communicates with project team in all stages of design. Works with Multimedia Coordinator to select and manage digital assets through the online Photo Library. Makes recommendations/adaptable in designing small quick turnaround pieces, as well as more elaborate campaigns that have a series of interrelated materials. Works with Multimedia Coordinator to select and manage digital assets through the online Photo Library. Makes recommendations for new photography based on anticipated needs of upcoming projects. Stays current with print and web design, production, and technology skills. Works independently and is self-directed in assisting University clients with graphic design requests. Recommends new processes to help the creative team become more efficient. Capable of creating compelling headlines and smart and concise body copy for a variety of advertising and promotional collateral. Add administration of the DesignConductor (template) system and related client services. Performs all duties in compliance with applicable University policies and procedures and state and federal requirements. Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Support, promote, and develop University student enrollment and retention initiatives. Any other duties assigned within the position classification area. Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: Attend meetings at the direction of and/or absence of the Director of Creative Services. Serve on various university and/or community committees as assigned by the Director of Creative Services. Reports directly to the Director of Creative Services. Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information. Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently and as part of a creative team. Communicates well and works seamlessly with administration, marketing and fundraising colleagues, university clients and vendors. Demonstrates impeccable attention to detail as it relates to both design and content. Preferred skill: Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Flash experience a plus. Proficient use of Adobe Creative Suite 5; Mac and Windows operating systems. Strong working knowledge of MS Office/Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Publisher/Outlook. Thrives in a deadline-driven environment, exhibits flexibility in juggling a high volume of short- and long-term design projects with varying levels of complexity, and is capable of effectively prioritizing work. Welcomes direction, enjoys collaboration, and handles constructive criticism well. Demonstrated commitment, experience, and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
