Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Construction Quality Assurance Engineer. As a vital member of the ES-DO team you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, and will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory. Note: This position will be filled at either the Quality Assurance Engineer 1/Quality Assurance Engineer 2 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Construction Quality Assurance Engineer 1 ($83,900 - $136,600)
As a Construction Quality Assurance Engineer you will provide field engineering support through review of construction submittals, technical clarification of design during construction, assuring installations conform to design drawings and manufacturer's instructions, timely identification of potential design conflict, scheduling testing and inspection of constructed work, documenting quality assurance and control processes, assisting with preparation of constructed work for commissioning, and assisting with turnover of completed work to facilities.
Construction Quality Assurance Engineer 2 ($92,300- $151,000)
In addition to what is outlined at the lower level, at this level you will also review design documents for constructability, assist in developing quality management plans for construction projects, and provide one-on-one mentoring of Construction Quality Assurance Engineer Level 1s.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic construction engineering principles
- Demonstrated ability in reading and understanding engineering design documents, drawings, and specifications to ensure their completeness and constructability
- Demonstrated experience interpreting construction industry specifications, construction means and methods, and national construction codes and standards relevant to the field engineering discipline
- Proven ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel
- Demonstrated proficiency in conducting field verifications of construction work to oversee, facilitate, and enforce compliance with drawings, specifications, national codes and standards
- Demonstrated proficiency in collaborative problem solving to resolve facility and infrastructure engineering issues in the field as the liaison between design engineers and the constructor.
- Obtaining and maintaining commercial inspection certifications associated with specific disciplines (e.g. International Code Council (ICC), American Concrete Institute (ACI) or other relevant commercial certifications
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Quality Assurance, or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 1 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Quality Assurance, or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 5 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Adept organizational skills for field engineering oversight and statusing of multiple simultaneous construction projects
- Aptitude for independently leading others in your field in the execution of their duties
- Experienced in working independently on tasks ranging in complexity
- Aptitude for mentoring junior Construction Engineers and Engineering Technologists in their design review, pre-construction coordination, and construction oversite activities
- Advanced design and/or construction experience in nuclear, accelerator, laboratory, or industrial facility operations
- Experience reviewing engineering submittals for compliance with engineering drawings and specifications
- Adept knowledge of: construction work planning and control methods; facility maintenance and installation techniques and construction principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices
- Skilled at reviewing field material purchase requisitions through material take-off, including the review of estimated quantities and ensuring compliance with design specifications and drawings
- Adept understanding of engineering and construction techniques, applications of engineering and construction methods, and application of technology and tools to conventional facility operation and construction operations
- Experience with design and/or installation of facility and infrastructure systems
- Demonstrated experience using and interpreting industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular construction discipline
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering
- Current inspector certifications within the structural, civil, mechanical, electrical or fire protection disciplines
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
