Job Title: Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist



Location: Opelika, AL


Job Summary:


We are seeking a  Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist to join our team at a leading state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Opelika, AL. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all Federal, State, and local environmental regulations and permit requirements. The EHS Specialist will plan and implement policies and programs related to all phases of environmental activities, fostering a safe and productive workplace.

Key Responsibilities:


General Responsibilities:




  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local environmental regulations and permit requirements.

  • Develop and execute policies and programs for environmental activities.

  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of new programs, strategies, and regulatory actions.

  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.

  • Develop and maintain required records and training programs (EPA, OSHA, ISO, etc.).

  • Monitor facilities to ensure safety and compliance with OSHA standards.

  • Assist with worker's compensation administration and case management.

  • Provide technical advice and knowledge within the EHS discipline.

  • Continuously improve EHS programs and processes.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.



Environmental Responsibilities:




  • Conduct site assessments to determine the environmental impact of operations.

  • Diagnose and address process issues, collaborating with business units to implement corrective actions.

  • Enforce compliance with handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and nonhazardous waste.

  • Improve recycling processes for nonhazardous waste.

  • Assist with testing of new chemicals, filters, and fluid processes.

  • Record and enforce air permitting compliance (dust collectors, thermal oxidizers, etc.).

  • Draft reports related to engineering calculations, regulatory compliance, and permit applications.



ISO 14001/45001 Standard Responsibilities:




  • Maintain the EHS Management System according to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.

  • Ensure proper maintenance of EHS documents, forms, and records.

  • Manage the corrective and preventive action program.

  • Oversee an internal auditing program and lead internal audits.

  • Provide EHS training and identify gaps for improvement.

  • Investigate and analyze root causes for audit non-conformances, implementing permanent corrective actions.



Qualifications:




  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field or comparable experience.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in an environmental position.

  • Knowledge of ISO 14001/45001 standards, regulations, and reporting criteria.

  • Ability to read and interpret legal documents, contracts, and technical journals.

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Effective communication skills (verbal, written, listening, persuasive).
