Teaching Assistant Professor â" Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Minnesota

Type: Full-time, 12 month appointment, Non-tenure track

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Minnesota, Twin-Cities campus, is seeking a promising and enthusiastic faculty member with a focus on teaching virology at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The primary role of this Teaching Assistant Professor position in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is to provide high-quality instruction in an upper-level undergraduate course on the biology of viruses and an advanced laboratory course focused on virology, immunology and microbial genetics. These courses are taken by students in the College of Biological Sciences, many of whom are pursuing the microbiology major. This individual would also contribute virology expertise to a team-taught microbiology course for graduate students in the Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology graduate program and support laboratory work for undergraduates in the summer.

The successful candidate will have a research background in virology and practical knowledge in microbiology and molecular genetics. The Teaching Assistant Professor is expected to have some teaching experience and interest in the use and development of student-centered / inquiry-driven teaching approaches that enhance student learning and further the teaching mission of the Department of Microbiology at the undergraduate level within the College of Biological Sciences and the graduate program within the University of Minnesota. The position is teaching-intensive but supportive of opportunities for scholarship and service including engagement in research related to teaching and learning. Essential Qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant field of study, plus applicable research experience focused on virology
  • Strong oral communication skills as evidenced in teaching-related activities, preparing and delivering significant research-related talks
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively, collegially and effectively within a diverse student and faculty environment.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Sufficient breadth of virology background to teach both undergraduate and graduate students - Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in virology, immunology and molecular genetics.
  • At least one semester of significant teaching experience as an instructor of record or functional equivalent
  • Experience with active learning approaches to undergraduate instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to develop clear, appropriately demanding expectations of students, effectively meet teaching responsibilities, and achieve successful student learning outcomes.

Salary Range
$51,178 to $100,000
