Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Position Overview: 'Off-scale salaries' and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience. A reasonable estimated salary range for this position is $127,300-$137,300 inclusive of the salary scale and off-scale salary components. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of California, Davis, invites applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor of Teaching. This position is as an Academic Senate faculty member eligible for promotion to 'Security of Employment,' which is analogous to tenure. The successful candidate is expected to have the potential to excel in teaching as demonstrated by their teaching experience (instructor or teaching assistant), professional development history, or other teaching-focused activities/interests. They will be expected to develop and implement innovative, effective, and inclusive pedagogical practices both within and outside of the classroom. Efforts to include groups who are underrepresented or come from historically marginalized communities are especially valued. The candidate must have the interest and ability to collaborate and contribute significantly to undergraduate teaching and mentoring missions of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. They will be expected to share effective teaching practices with other department faculty. We are looking for a candidate who has strengths in the fundamentals of civil and environmental engineering (including ability to teach Statics and Mechanics of Materials courses) and who is enthusiastic to develop and bring innovative pedagogical practices and educational frameworks into these and other courses. We also seek in a candidate a level of practical engineering knowledge that would enhance our senior design efforts. Potential additional strengths include the ability to teach other courses across the undergraduate Structural Engineering curriculum, or any other civil engineering courses . While teaching potential is a major consideration, candidates will also be expected to demonstrate potential for professional and scholarly achievement and activities, university and public service, and inclusive excellence. Scholarship may focus in, but is not limited to, the areas of engineering education, scholarship of teaching, program assessment, and integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into civil engineering curriculum. Our CEE department includes 38 faculty and 160 graduate students, obtained $16.7M in research funding in 2022, and is ranked among the top R1 universities in Civil Engineering (ranked 11th in US News & World Report 2024 rankings). We hired our first professor of teaching series faculty member in 2015 who successfully attained security (analogous to tenure) in 2019. There are 7 professor of teaching series positions in the UC Davis College of Engineering. A reasonable estimated salary range for this position is $127,300-$137,300 inclusive of the salary scale and off-scale salary components. Applicants must have earned one of their degrees in civil engineering or a closely related field, with a preference for those whose record demonstrates a strong background in structural engineering/structural mechanics. They must have a PhD in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Engineering Education, or a closely related field by the time of hire. Participation in department, college, and university service as a member of UC Davis Division of the Academic Senate is an expectation under the faculty shared governance model.
