Job Type: Officer of Administration Regular/Temporary: Regular Hours Per Week: 35 Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000 The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Position Summary The Columbia University School of General Studies (GS) is the finest liberal arts college in the United States dedicated to making Ivy League education accessible to nontraditional students. GS was founded in 1947 with the mission of expanding access to elite higher education, and it remains the most diverse college in the Ivy League, with many transfer, first-generation, and international students. GS students are fully integrated with Columbia???s broader undergraduate population and are taught by Columbia???s celebrated faculty. The Assistant Dean of Advising has a significant role in key sectors of the GS Advising team, working with staff and students to support and extend the excellence of undergraduate education at Columbia. The Assistant Dean of Advising responsibilities will focus on: Advising students on academic, administrative and personal matters as relates to students??? academic goals and plans of study. Responsibilities Advises 350 students on academic planning and progress, registration, course selection, GS core requirements, degree requirements, declaring a major, leaves of absence, academic support services, and other academic and administrative policies. Includes email, Zoom, and in-person advising with students and contact with faculty members and other university administrators related to individual student cases. Heavy focus on advising students enrolled in GS???s international Dual BA degree programs. Assist with the design and implementation of student programming including orientation, site visit planning, and other student support programming for international dual BA program students. Administrative duties associated with advising load include: processing withdrawal and leaves of absence forms and generating follow-up communication; pre-screening applications for study abroad, fellowships, special majors, mentoring, and graduation; preparing petitions and reports for review by the Committee on Academic Standing; preparing preliminary graduation check out for senior advisees; responsible for the orderly maintenance of advisees??? educational records and files; delivering academic planning sessions; participating in student and office events including but not limited to Jumpstart, New Student Orientation, graduation festivities, Honor Society events, etc. Serves on committees as required. Travels semesterly to visit international partner institutions as required. Perform other tasks and projects as required. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor???s degree or equivalent required; advanced graduate degree or equivalent in related experience preferred. Minimum of 3 years of related experience in teaching or advising in an academic setting is required. Must be able to adjust to multiple demands and shifting priorities and be a team player. Must possess excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership, and organizational skills. Knowledge of MS Office is required. Proficiency with SIS (Student Information Services) is desirable.
