Pay Range

 

$142,050 - $218,868 Annually

 

$142,050 - $182,388 Annually for the TSS.3 level

 

$170,430 - $218,868 Annually for the TSS.4 level

 

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have multiple openings for Senior Weapons Production Group (WPG) Quality Engineers. You will support new and on-going activities in support of the weapon system surveillance and production operations. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) and support the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program, within the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Principal Directorate.

 

Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

 

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

 

You will

 


  • Collaborate with Product Realization Team (PRT) members on Product Realization Process (PRP) activities and ensure work on weapon, weapon related, and surveillance product is executed per DTED and WTE procedures, NNSA Weapon Quality Policy NAP 401.1A and the requirements of Defense Programs Business Process Systems (DPBPS).

  • Interact and coordinate with the NNSA, Design Agency, and Production Agency staff at all levels -Designers, Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Management.

  • Participate as a core member on multiple PRTs to provide complex quality related expertise on design intent, quality assurance functions, production, surveillance, configuration management and writing and communicating clear concise requirements using in-depth analysis and/or ingenuity.

  • Establish guidance for, participate in, lead the review and critique of Engineering Authorizations (EAs), documentation, and part definition per applicable standards to ensure compliance with NNSA requirements and Design Agency (DA) quality standards.

  • Identify, define, and implement process improvements achieving increased efficiency and compliance across the WTE program.

  • Lead development and training of technical guidance on DTED/WTE processes, NAP 401.1A and DPBPS requirements for engineering, scientific, and technical staff at Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) Design and Production Agency locations.

  • Perform responsibilities of an independent Quality Engineer assessor during formal EE's by traveling to Production Agencies and other manufacturing sites to observe, verify, and ensure the implementation of and consistent adherence to standard requirements, repeatable fabrication, inspection, assembly, and surveillance processes.

  • Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with quality organizations across the nuclear enterprise.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.4 level

 


  • Support WTE management in setting direction for quality implementation and supporting strategic engagements across the program.

  • Assess, communicate, and resolve impacts from changes to federal requirements, institutional requirements, and production agency processes.

  • Provide quality subject matter expertise and advanced support to engineers/scientists in solving highly complex technical problems for various projects within the WTE Program.

  • Identify, implement, and monitor corrective actions both internally to LLNL and at partnering PAs.

  • Proactively address and influence resolution of emergent and systemic quality issues between LLNL and production agencies.

  • Identify, assess, and implement process improvements for achieving increased efficiency and ensuring compliance to quality requirements across the WTE program.



Qualifications


  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.

  • Bachelor's degree in quality, mechanical, or electrical engineering or related field; or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.

  • Advanced knowledge and application of engineering design, fabrication, assembly techniques and materials, material properties, manufacturing methods, theory, manufacturing, and inspection processes.

  • Advanced knowledge and application of Weapon or Weapon Related design, materials, fabrication, assembly, product realization process, production drawings or engineering authorizations.

  • Significant experience with QA/QC documentation approaches and practices.

  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills and experience participating in engineering testing operations, analyzing results, writing reports, and creating presentations, and conducting and participating in design reviews.

  • Experience exercising a high degree of independent judgement and ability to collaborate and coordinate across technical teams, clearly articulate, and effectively interpret and ensure design documentation meets established requirements.

  • Advanced knowledge and application of QA/QC documentation practices, engineering drafting policies, and standards including ASME Y14.5M Dimensioning and Tolerancing concepts.

  • Ability to travel up to 35% to meet programmatic milestones.

 

Additional qualifications at the TSS.4 level

 


  • Significant experience with, and application and development of, advanced fabrication and assembly techniques directly applicable to material, components, systems, and equipment.

  • Significant experience applying, developing, and realizing conceptual designs of mechanical/electronic systems, testing prototypes and associated diagnostics, and experience with CAD/computer design packages.

  • Significant experience establishing and sustaining a quality program for highly specialized products and systems.

 

Qualifications We Desire

 


  • Advanced knowledge of NNSA Weapon Quality Policy (NAP-401.1A), Defense Programs Business Process System (DPBPS), or Engineering Authorizations.

  • Knowledge of materials, equipment, or technologies associated with production of mechanical hardware, electronics, additive manufacturing, and/or high explosives.

  • Knowledge and experience in nuclear weapons program stockpile systems, components, classified materials, experimental data, and related diagnostic and testing equipment.

  • Knowledge of Windchill, CREO, and Altium.
