Researcher 5 - Military Veterans

at HERC- Upper MidWest

Focusing on structural and functional studies of virus and host interactions, the Hafenstein lab is fully outfitted for mammalian cell culture, large-scale virus, and protein expression and purification, as well as biochemical analysis. Researchers enjoy access to a state-of-the-art in-house Cryo-EM facility featuring a Titan Krios microscope equipped with an energy filter and K3 Direct electron detector. A planned expansion includes the acquisition of a second Titan Krios with Selectris and Falcon 4i detector, an Arctis FIB/SEM, and all ancillary equipment for tomography. The Hormel Institute also houses an equipment core including fluorescent microscopes as well as analytical ultracentrifugation, ITC and BIACORE instruments, along with shared common use high speed centrifuges and a range of other high-end microscopes. The core facilities are further supported by dedicated facility managers responsible for training, support, and usage of equipment.

Lead the development of protocols on the newly acquired Arctis and tomography workflow.
Lead the development of sample preparation and presentation for in situ experiments using the Arctis.
Conduct biochemical experiments.
Analyze research methods and data.
Write research reports and give scientific presentations.
