Assistant Professor of Biology | Davidson College - Military Veterans

at HERC- Southeast

The Davidson College Biology Department invites applications from evolutionary biologists to fill a new tenure-track position at the assistant professor level. We seek an evolutionary biologist whose research uses genomic and/or genetic methods to address questions in phylogenomics, phylogenetics, metagenomics, evolutionary development, molecular ecology, and/or molecular evolution, and who can develop and teach a broad evolutionary biology laboratory course. Individuals who will value teaching and mentoring an increasingly diverse undergraduate student body within the context of a liberal arts education are particularly encouraged to apply. We will initially evaluate applicants for their potential to advance departmental and institutional goals in inclusive teaching and diversity, equity, and inclusion, as evidenced by their experience and training. We will then evaluate candidates' potential for excellence in undergraduate education and mentorship, accomplishment in research within a subfield listed above, and ability to contribute distinctive teaching and research that each enhance existing department strengths. Teaching responsibilities include a rotation of: 1) introductory biology focusing on organismal, ecological, and evolutionary biology (with labs), 2) a broad upper-level evolution course (with labs), and 3) one or more other courses in the candidate's area of expertise, to equal an annual five-course teaching load (in which courses with laboratories count as two courses and the load is reduced by one course for the first year). A Ph.D. in biology or a related field is required by the start date of July 1, 2025. Postdoctoral research and teaching experience or training are preferred. The successful candidate will develop an active undergraduate research program that we will support with start-up funds, a dedicated research lab in a modern and well-equipped science building designed to promote innovative teaching and collaboration, access to an ecological preserve, a greenhouse, a staffed vivarium, and support for acquiring and administering external funding. New faculty members at Davidson benefit from a variety of support systems, including professional development opportunities, professional travel funding, affinity groups, formal and informal mentorship, and more. Interested candidates should review the full position description and application guidance ( go.davidson.edu/EvoBio ). Applications must be submitted at employment.davidson.edu by September 8, 2024.
