Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology - Military Veterans

Carleton College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology (tenure track) beginning September 1, 2025. We seek an emerging scholar with a strong background in teaching cultural musicology and related subjects to undergraduates in a liberal arts setting. We are open to ethnomusicologists working in any cultural area or tradition whose research interests will complement the methodologies and expertise of the other members of the department.

Carleton values faculty scholarship and research and supports these through a variety of internal funding opportunities, including sabbatical leaves every three years, additional internal grants, and startup funds. Carleton's grants office assists faculty in applying for external funding (e.g., NEH, ACLS, Fulbright, etc.).

Carleton faculty teach five courses over three ten-week terms per year. Teaching duties for this position will involve courses in our music major curriculum , including a core course in ethnomusicology and an upper level seminar(s) in the candidate's area(s) of interest, as well as introductory and intermediate level courses directed at the general student population. We seek candidates who will be able to forge teaching connections with other departments on campus, and we are particularly interested in candidates committed to teaching a diverse student body in a liberal arts context.

Candidates should have a PhD in Ethnomusicology or Musicology with an appropriate subfield, and should have their degree in hand before the position begins on September 1, 2025.
