Lead Groundskeeper | Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory - Military Veterans

Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division is hiring a Lead Groundskeeper . This role involves leading a team of 2-10 workers to maintain the Laboratory grounds, including tasks like lawn cutting, tree pruning, raking, planting, and watering. The Lead Groundskeeper provides leadership, works independently on tasks, and collaborates with supervisors on safety issues. What You Will Do: Perform routine grounds maintenance, including site cleanup, planting, mowing, hedging, raking, watering, weeding, debris removal, and operating the wood chipper. Prune and trim trees as needed. Operate and maintain power tools, hand tools, and government vehicles. Oversee the use of heavy equipment, including the wood chipper and boom lifts. Act as a Lead and perform Lead duties under general supervision. Work independently on routine tasks, ensuring team members follow Berkeley Lab's safe work practices. Inspect grounds daily for cleanliness and quality, reporting issues to the supervisor. Use a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) like Maximo to generate, assign, and update work orders. Conduct job briefings with groundskeepers upon receipt of work orders and address work order questions. Utilize Google Suite for scheduling and communication with other Facilities Division groups and external stakeholders. Monitor larger projects to ensure even workload distribution. Collaborate with Facilities Division and Lab staff to plan work, reporting progress and issues to the Supervisor. Ensure the safe use and maintenance of power tools and equipment, and organize tools, trucks, and shops. Additional duties include managing tools and equipment, maintaining inventory records, and ensuring proper maintenance, repair, and calibration of equipment. Ensure compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements for yourself and the crew. Perform additional duties as needed, such as traffic flagging, installing barricades, and erosion control. Comply with all safety and environmental policies, ensuring proper vegetation management and waste minimization. Immediately stop work in case of danger, notify the appropriate parties, and work to correct hazardous conditions. Partner with stakeholders to ensure compliance and safe completion of work, and manage green waste container pickups. Ensure all activities, especially those with potential hazards, follow Operational Safety Procedures to mitigate risks. Maintain exposure to toxic chemicals, ionizing radiation, and contaminants within prescribed standards. Collaborate with the supervisor to identify and implement improvement opportunities and best practices for work execution, including preventive maintenance. Perform all work safely, promote workplace health and safety, and protect the environment. Be familiar with PUB 3000 and injury reporting. Attend safety, technical meetings, and training, including SUM Craft Lead meetings, and provide input. Ensure compliance with safety training and requirements for yourself and the crew. Drive pickup trucks and passenger cars to and from the work site. What is Required: Minimum of 1 year experience in shop work, grounds maintenance, labor, or gardening, OR an equivalent 1-year combination of education and experience. Leadership skills with the ability to delegate work. Valid California Driver's License and ability to operate vans, trucks, or other large utility vehicles. Analytical and troubleshooting skills. Ability to plan and carry out assignments independently. Strong customer service and conflict management skills. Experience with power equipment and tools, including safe troubleshooting. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read and interpret guidelines and procedures. Proficiency with computers, including CMMS for work orders, email, and calendaring services. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolds, work at heights, in confined spaces, and under fluorescent lighting. Ability to work safely around rotating equipment. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and have manual dexterity in both hands for operating tools and equipment. Desired Qualifications: Minimum of two (2) years of leading/supervisory/delegating work to others experience. Notes: This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid). This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. The hourly range for this position is $28.20 - $41.05. The hourly rate for this position is based on a step schedule and the final candidate's qualifications and relevant experience. This position may be subject to a background check.
