Postdoctoral Appointee - Organic Materials Chemist - Military Veterans

at Argonne National Laboratory

The Applied Materials Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Candidate in synthetic organic chemistry, chemistry with a focus on new organic monomers and materials for new recyclable-by-design plastics. This position will primarily involve work on materials synthesis in a laboratory environment. Characterization and use-testing of new materials will also be required. Previous experience with organic monomer synthesis is highly recommended.

The candidate will design or modify laboratory procedures and protocols, develop experimental designs, run technical experiments, make detailed observations, gather and analyze data, and effectively report results. Candidates will be expected to formally present research progress on a monthly basis.

Position Requirements


  • A degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Chemistry or related field with 0 to 2 years of experience.

  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in the following areas: organic chemistry and synthesis, materials characterization.

  • Hands-on experience in small molecule analytical techniques.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and on a timely basis with the laboratory supervisory personnel on all developments or matters resulting from laboratory work activities.

  • Ability to maintain organized notebooks and project files.

  • Proven ability to be a team player.

  • A high commitment to safety.

  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in polymer chemistry or polymer analysis.
