Postdoctoral Appointee -- Metallurgy - Military Veterans

at Argonne National Laboratory

The candidate will perform basic and applied research in the field of metallization and metal production, such as molten salt electrolysis, aqueous electrolysis, metallothermic reduction, including physico-chemical property determination. The candidate will conduct R&D to help develop processes to decarbonize the metals industry and promote materials circularity. The candidate will work in the Emergent Materials and Processes Group in the Applied Materials Division.


  • Perform technical work related to the development of new processes for metals production and processing.

  • Prepare formal reports, makes presentations, and publish to establish leadership position in R&D for metallization.



Position Requirements

  • PhD degree in chemistry, materials science, metallurgy, chemical engineering, or related scientific background with 0-3 years' experience.

  • Experience with electrochemistry in the physical measurements of ionic liquids, molten salts and slags.

  • Experience in pyrometallurgy and electrolysis of molten salts or oxides to produce metals.

  • Skilled in safely handling air sensitive chemicals.

  • Experience with glovebox operation.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and innovation skills.

  • Skilled organizational and critical thinking skills.

  • Able to prioritize and manage time effectively.

  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
