Assistant Dean - Academic Affairs College of the Holy Cross Description The Provost's Office seeks an exceptional colleague to assume a critical new role within transformational growth and development in the division of academic affairs. Reporting jointly to the Provost and the Dean of Faculty, the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs will be a key contributor to the successful operations of the Provost's Office and the division of academic affairs. The Assistant Dean will partner with the Provost on multiple sensitive and complex matters, including researching and preparing materials for Board meetings; managing confidential and highly sensitive faculty personnel matters, conducting external benchmarking research, interacting with external partners (including academics, board members, government and industry leaders, and benefactors), serving as the Provost's delegate on College committees and working groups, and performing other duties as assigned. Duties in support of the Provost will be generally about 40% of the position. The Assistant Dean will work closely and collaboratively with the Dean of Faculty to optimize the tenure-track and visiting faculty hiring processes, working closely with search chairs and department members, managing and adapting appointment materials and negotiating startup packages and many other elements of faculty appointments as directed by the Dean of Faculty. The Assistant Dean will also have significant responsibility working with department chairs and program directors, and as directed by the Dean of Faculty to devise, develop, or execute a wide array of projects and initiatives related to faculty recruitment, faculty development, and academic affairs. The Assistant Dean will have basic financial and budgetary responsibilities, as directed by the Dean of Faculty. Duties in support of the Dean of Faculty will be generally about 60% of the position. The Assistant Dean will be a driven, optimistic, and collaborative professional with demonstrated proficiency in the following areas: Writing, copyediting, independent research, and complex analysis. Presentation and communication. Project management. Managing confidential and sensitive information. Diplomacy, optimism, sound judgment. Data management, visualization, and basic data storytelling. Financial and budget management skills. Prior professional experience in academic affairs is desirable but not required. Some teaching or research experience in higher education is desirable but not required. Minimum Qualifications A graduate degree is required, as is demonstrated professional success featuring progressively increasing levels of responsibility. Preferred qualifications include experience in a similar role in higher education or industry (academic medicine, law, industry, startup) as well as familiarity with human-centered design principles and ease in navigating academic environments. Terminal graduate degree in the field preferred. Competencies and Skills Exceptional skills as a writer, researcher, and analyst, including precision and unimpeachable attention to detail. Commitment to and understanding of academic excellence, inclusive excellence, and the value proposition of an exclusively undergraduate Jesuit liberal arts college. Creativity, imagination, optimism, empathy and an innovative mindset. Interpersonal communication skills that include diplomacy, attention to detail, timeliness, and respect for the dignity of all while serving as the representative of the Provost's Office to partners and collaborators. Commitment to the success of others and to cultivating a workplace that is growth-oriented, respectful, and fun. Skilled with current technologies, systems and methods for project management, collaboration and communication. Finalists will be asked to work through a simulated case study that demonstrates the professional skills, abilities, and approaches necessary for success in the position.This is a 12 month, 100% full time staff position located in the Provost's Office. It cannot be combined with an underlying tenured appointment at Holy Cross. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is a full time, exempt level position.
