Job Summary

Auburn University's Library department is seeking a Graduate Student Assistant to work in the Library of Architecture, Design and Construction (LADC). This is a branch of Auburn University Libraries that supports the research, study, and teaching needs of students, faculty, and staff in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction. The LADC is also a resource for professionals in related fields and for the community.

Essential Functions

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist the LADC faculty, staff, and student employees in providing a wide variety of assistance and instructional services to patrons at the LADC help desk. This includes providing reference, technology, circulation, and other information services as appropriate to patrons. Such services include, but are not limited to:


  • Answering research, directional, and technology questions in-person, via online chat, and by telephone.

  • Instructing patrons in using the Libraries' catalog and databases to locate and evaluate information that meets their needs.

  • Keeping track of the number and nature of questions asked by patrons.

  • Responsibly opening and closing the library during assigned shifts according to the LADC's hours of operation.

  • Assisting library faculty and staff on assigned projects that support the research and instructional function of the LADC, including reference and collection development.

  • Participating in thoughtful conversations with patrons regarding their research questions.

  • Maintaining knowledge of standard library resources in all formats.

  • Troubleshooting issues and instructing patrons in using the LADC's equipment and software technology.

  • Assist with the supervision of undergraduate students.


Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should be students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program of study at Auburn University, with a strong academic background and excellent public service and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference is given to applicants with strong research skills, teaching skills, and working knowledge of technology, equipment, and applications frequently used in the LADC including large-format printers and scanners, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Autodesk.

Pay Rate

$15.00/hour

Work Hours

Up to 20 hours per week. Must be available to work LADC operating hours.

    Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899 the name again was changed, to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name of the school was changed to Auburn University, a title more in keeping with its location, and expressing the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university.
