Post-Doctoral Associate - Military Veterans

at HERC- Upper MidWest

We seek a quantitative ecologist to develop mechanistic models of animal movement using birds as a model system. We are interested in recruiting an individual with skills in theoretical modeling, macroecology, movement ecology, statistical inference, and machine learning (desirable). The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for 1) managing different types of distributional and remote sensing data, 2) developing mechanistic models to better understand how migratory behavior influences the patterns of community structure, and 3) writing manuscripts to communicate the results.

Percentage breakdown of duties:
60% Conduct and publish independent scientific research that develops mechanistic models of animal movement. These models must be tested using empirical distributional data (e.g., North American Breeding Bird Survey, eBird) in combination with remote sensing data products. Collect and analyze different remote sensing data products (e.g., wildlife tracking data) and animal morphological data to address novel questions on animal movement.
20% Assist collaborators with data collection and data management decisions.
20% Other duties, including preparation and delivery of presentations and public outreach.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. by the start of the position (mid-September) and experience in quantitative ecology, applied statistics, or a closely related field with a strong statistics and model development background.
Analytical and programming skills commensurate with Ph.D. level training.
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, write, and publish high-quality scientific work.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with large data sets (Big data).
Experience with R, Python, JavaScript, and/or other programming languages.
Experience with Bayesian modeling and development of animal movement models.
Multidisciplinary skills to bridge fields such as macroecology, population ecology, movement ecology, theoretical ecology, and geospatial statistics.
Respect for and sensitivity to diverse cultures, identities, and backgrounds in the workplace.
