Provide multifunctional user support and technical support for the 8.3.1 and 12.3.1 beamlines at the Advanced Light Source. Requires professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation. The incumbent will be the primary user support contact for ALS beamline 8.3.1. This involves one-on-one training of users, starting up each shift, regular tuning and maintenance of the hardware and documenting the best-practices procedures. The position will also require design and construction of new equipment and apparatus, testing and optimizing the new hardware and developing the best protocols for using it. Examples include automatic sample de-icing, a puck/cassette unpacking robot, an in-situ tray screening goniometer, and interfacing this hardware with the BLU-ICE control system. The incumbent will also play an active role in advancing the research projects of UCSF scientists and our guest users, optimizing and directing the performance of the beamline to suit the needs of these projects. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).
