Job Summary The Senior Case Writer will collaborate with Harvard Kennedy School faculty to research and develop custom teaching cases, issue briefs, teaching plans and associated curricular materials in a broad array of fields related to public policy. This is a unique opportunity to craft original curricular materials on complex topics and drive policy discussions in classrooms at HKS and around the globe. The HKS Case Program publishes the world's largest collection of teaching cases designed to train public leaders. A successful candidate will be a self-starter who is deeply interested in policy issues, can independently research and write cases on complex topics with limited supervision, and has the collaboration skills to nurture productive partnerships with faculty clients, case protagonists and colleagues. The Senior Case Writer must be a quick study who is eager to pick up new skills and must be undeterred by assignments that require them to rapidly develop expertise in new content areas. Exceptional communication skills and discretion, as well as ability to give and receive feedback with tact will be key success factors. Impeccable academic writing and research skills, as well as excellent analytical and interviewing skills are required. Candidates must be flexible, adaptable and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, delivering quality products that meet the project brief under tight deadlines. Occasional travel, both domestic and international, may be required. The Senior Case Writer will report to the Associate Director of the Case Program and will collaborate with colleagues at SLATE (the HKS program to Strengthen Learning and Teaching Excellence initiative) within which the Case Program is housed, on initiatives related to case teaching and curriculum development. Other duties as required. Position Description Research and develop cases and related teaching materials (90%) In collaboration with the Associate Director and faculty sponsor, create a curriculum development plan that accurately scopes the case topic to meet its classroom learning objectives. Conduct research, including reviewing publicly available print materials, sourcing and analyzing internal organization documents, and conducting interviews with protagonists and other sources. All research must be appropriately sourced, cited, and attributed. Conceptualize and write case materials that are responsive to the faculty client's goals and predetermined learning objectives. As needed, develop original exhibits and auxiliary materials using a variety of tools, including data visualizations, maps, and web-based interactive exercises. Collaborate with faculty case sponsors to develop teaching plans to accompany every new case. Collaborate with the Senior Multimedia Case Producer to develop video supplements and/or multimedia cases as needed. Editorial and administrative support (10%): Solicit, receive and incorporate editorial feedback on case materials. Provide thoughtful and actionable feedback to colleagues upon request. As needed, provide oversight and feedback to student research assistants on cases that require specialized expertise (for example, translation support). Other duties as assigned, including occasional administrative tasks related to case quality assurance and research best practices. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7 years of professional writing experience in case writing, graduate-level curriculum development, academic writing, communications, or related. Additional Qualifications and Skills If you have some but not all of the following, we encourage you to apply; we value employees with a willingness to learn: Master's degree in public policy (or related degree) and/or strong working knowledge of concepts and methodologies taught in graduate level policy courses, including: microeconomics, statistics, international development, international relations, political science, leadership and management, and social policy. Deep experience in the case method, case design and case research/writing strongly preferred. Experience writing graduate level curricular materials, including documents such as teaching plans, is preferred. Comfort working closely with an editor or client to define and meet their goals and requirements. Experience creating or collaborating on the production of multimedia materials such as videos, podcasts, etc. Knowledge of ethical storytelling practices that are inclusive of historically underrepresented perspectives. Comfort and experience self-teaching new technical skills and new content-area expertise to meet the needs of a given project. Proven track record of juggling multiple long-form writing projects while meeting staggered deadlines and deliverables. Salary Range : $74,200 - $126,200 Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
