Sr. Director - Litigation Case Management Team - Military Veterans

We are seeking a highly experienced and innovative Sr. Director to lead and work alongside Lilly’s Litigation Case Management Team (LCMT), responsible for supporting all aspects of litigation throughout the lifecycle of cases. This leader will interact closely with internal and external litigation counsel, Lilly’s eDiscovery team and vendors, and other key partners to help set and implement individual case strategy, and cohesively manage Lilly’s overall docket and related processes. This role requires a results-driven leader with significant experience in developing and implementing efficient and effective case management processes, embedding an attitude of continuing innovation in teams, and leading teams in a challenging high-volume, high-stakes environment. The Sr. Director will be a strong communicator, creative thinker, agile problem-solver, and facilitator in driving alignment and leading change across the litigation function. The ideal candidate will bring creative solutions to the table and effectively lead and implement on those ideas to help transform the LCMT.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Transformation:

  • Lead and manage the LCMT, ensuring the team has the necessary tools and resources to support global litigation, government investigations, and privileged investigations, and support case work as necessary to meet docket demands.
  • Direct the ongoing transformation of the LCMT function to support increasingly complex litigation, drive efficiencies, standardize and streamline processes and clarify roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities.
  • Actively lead the implementation of transformative ideas to enhance case management and litigation support.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, execution, positivity, connectivity, and excellence within the LCMT, and between the team and counsel, eDiscovery, vendors, and Legal Operations partners.
  • Establish and maintain consistency in business and litigation positions across all matters.
  • Demonstrate and instill practical and effective problem-solving capabilities across the team.
  • Ensure that all work product and performance are held to a consistent and high standard.

Process Management and Innovation:

  • Establish, manage, and implement robust LCMT protocols, processes, and procedures, incorporating best practices in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, internal policies, and external benchmarking.
  • Streamline the development and implementation of innovative litigation support tools, implementing automation and AI, with a goal to minimize low-risk/administrative tasks. This allows LCMT members to concentrate on tasks with higher risk and impact.
  • Develop and maintain case and workload reporting, and partner with Legal Operations to track key metrics for the litigation function.
  • Work with Lilly counsel to establish consistent SLAs for case management tasks and processes.
  • Use and manage vendors strategically to enhance value and impact.
  • Develop defensible processes and ensure adequate training and cross-training across the team.
  • Keep abreast of trends and developments relevant to case management, proactively communicate new insights, and implement groundbreaking solutions to problems.
  • Establish reliable and innovative solutions to track case developments, ensuring transparency on case progression and status at every level of the litigation function.
  • Build case lifecycle management and transparency across the docket, ensuring strong processes and procedures that can withstand high volume. pressure and fast turnarounds.

Collaboration and Cross-Functional Partnership:

  • Actively participate in and lead Legal, LCMT, and case-specific legal team meetings, contributing to recommendations and decisions regarding case strategy, activities, and plans.
  • Consistently collaborate with internal and external counsel and the eDiscovery team to develop and implement case strategies and discovery plans, ensuring compliance and consistency in strategy and data production.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with personnel across Legal and other functional areas to effectively influence case management implementation.
  • Share lessons learned from case management across the team and establish continuing education opportunities for the LCMT forums.

Compliance and Reporting:

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategies to meet Global Product Safety (GPS) reporting requirements for litigation matters and claims.
  • Oversee the GPS quarterly compliance certification process with external product liability counsel and the CMS annual profile certification process for Medicare Secondary Reporting obligations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience directly managing litigation legal services teams and processes in a fast-paced, high-volume litigation function, preferably in-house in pharmaceutical, health care or other highly regulated industries.
  • Additional law firm experience supporting complex litigation case management preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Paralegal certification or JD preferred
  • Deep understanding and strategic application of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
  • Proven ability to influence decisions and drive impactful solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively with business partners supporting litigation matters, including witnesses and document custodians.
  • Experience in anticipating and resolving problems affecting case management activities and information gathering needs.
  • Strong written, spoken, and presentation communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Effective teamwork skills and adaptability to diverse interpersonal styles.
  • Innovative approach to litigation and investigation processes, striving for best in class.
