Lab Operations and Safety Manager About the Opportunity Responsibilities: The Department of Chemical Engineering seeks a driven, dynamic professional for the Lab Operations and Safety Manager. This role serves as the Department Safety Officer and Department Property Liaison and has space planning and administration responsibilities for all Chemical Engineering research and teaching laboratories, including shared laboratories. Department Safety Officer: Serves as the principal liaison with COE Associate Director of Academic Operations, COE Associate Director of Lab Operations, and the Office of Academic and Research Safety (OARS). Oversees and maintains access (card authorization, keys, combinations, etc.) to the research and teaching laboratories, ensuring that lab personnel are properly trained before laboratory access is granted and that their training is kept current. Provides oversight of all department laboratories to confirm lab hazards and ensure all personnel seeking access to common equipment are properly trained and required safety trainings are up to date. Ensures that department laboratories are always compliant with university safety policies. Conducts informal research lab inspections periodically throughout the year and attends OARS official inspections to follow up with lab groups regarding any action items. Serves as department representative for Laboratory Safety Committee meetings and communicates any essential information to Departmental faculty/staff regarding facilities or lab interruptions or institutional safety changes to be broadly implemented. Works closely with the departmental technician and laboratory staff regarding safety issues and with Department Safety Officers for other departments within shared research spaces. Supervise the specific safety training of teaching assistants, faculty, and students in teaching labs. Organize and oversee annual testing and certifications of biological safety cabinets and/or fume hoods. Review proposed projects with faculty and advising students on safety of project specifications, including advising student teams concerning compliance and safety, including IRB (Institutional Review Board), IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee), and IBC (Institutional Biosafety Committee). Aggregate department safety statistics, and key safety measures implemented and in the pipeline to the IAB (industrial advisory board) semi-annually. Space Planning and Administration: Facilitation of design, development, renovation, and operations for Chemical Engineering research and teaching labs. Assist with new hire laboratory start-ups and laboratory decommissions. Work closely with all college and facilities personnel, Department Chair, Senior Business Manager, and COE Associate Director of Lab Operations, for buildings across the Northeastern campus where departmental laboratories are located. Maintain graduate student seating chart for the department and edit it at least each semester. Advise departmental researchers on purchasing related to facilities & safety in Departmental research and teaching labs, specifically with given specifications, and research vendors, obtain multiple quotes when required, and negotiate discounts with vendors if appropriate. Manage the placement, tracking, and delivery of laboratory equipment. Manage the process related to lab facilities requests and moving, such as transportation, and logistics with large equipment and biohazard materials. Department Property Liaison: Establish department controls to support proper usage, maintenance, and security for capital assets with intended purpose. Coordinate with Controller's Office to maintain proper capital asset records. At least annually, review and validate the accuracy of department-level inventory records provided by the Controller's Office. Authorize unit-level requests for asset disposition, transfer, trade-in, sale, and/or notify Controller's Office of theft or loss of capital equipment. Coordinate with the Controller's Office during internal and external inventory audits. Develop and maintain electronic copies of department facilities. Coordinate and schedule access to equipment in core facility (if relevant). The Laboratory Operations and Safety Manager will report to the Senior Business Manager of the Chemical Engineering department and work closely with the Associate Director of Lab Operations. Qualifications: Master's degree preferred or bachelor's degree with 3-5 years of experience in chemical engineering or related field. At least 2 years of experience working in an industry or academic laboratory operations, preferably within a shared laboratory setting required. Excellent coordination and communication skills to effectively negotiate and appropriately influence the safety behavior of teaching and research faculty, lab workers, and other staff, and students engaged in high-risk activities. Proficient in standard computer software packages including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook. Ability and willingness to learn new systems independently required and to evolve with technological advances as appropriate. Ability to work well independently as well as within a team environment. Strong organizational skills and a problem-solving mindset are required. The candidate will naturally be proactive with the ability to take initiative and ownership of responsibilities. Ability to work and service labs, PIs, and students across multiple buildings on the Boston campus. This position requires work to be done on campus, Monday through Friday.
