Capitol Bureau Reporter - Military Veterans
at Hearst
Capitol Bureau Reporter
The Times Union has an immediate opening for a reporter interested in covering one of the nation's most fascinating arenas of corruption, raw power and - every now and then - idealism: the New York State Capitol. We're seeking someone who can break from a highly competitive press pack to produce impactful stories with depth and voice. Candidates should be well-versed in cracking open government secrets through source development and the application of FOIL. Familiarity with the folkways of politicians and the criminal justice system will come in handy.
What you'll do:
- Break down the insider politics and show how legislation will affect the day-to-day lives of New Yorkers.
- Work with an award-winning Capitol Bureau headed by the paper's managing editor for investigations.
- Stay on top of the interests of the vast state workforce, many of whom make the Capital Region their home.
- Develop a network of sources across a diverse set of communities.
- Work the levers of public transparency law to better serve watchdog journalism.
- Stay ahead of the competition.
- Collaborate across the newsroom, particularly with our digital team, to maximize the reach of your stories.
- Someone who is community-oriented and wants to engage with all sectors of the population, not just the well-known.
- A self-starter with great communication skills
- Proficient with basic Windows programs including Outlook, Excel and Word
- Someone who thinks five minutes early is late
- Someone with an innate curiosity and healthy skepticism
- A college graduate with a bachelors' degree in journalism, communications, English, or another relevant subject
- Someone who can self-manage and handle multiple projects and fast deadlines
- Someone with an appreciation of Slack, Zoom and other remote-friendly tools
This is full-time, union-covered, position. It will include some weekend and holiday work.
