Nuclear Operations Direct License Candidate

Job Summary

This position is for individuals entering a direct license program to gain an NRC license at a Duke Energy facility. Individuals will be expected to successfully pass all license training program requirements to obtain an NRC license as a Reactor Operator or Senior Reactor Operator.

  • Exposure to dust, fumes, and high noise levels

  • Ability to wear protective clothing including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection and gloves due to heavy industrial environment (rotating equipment with high temperature and high-pressure fluids up to 650f and 2235 psig)

  • Includes climbing, stooping, pulling and pushing


Basic / Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or the equivalent

  • Shall have one or more of the following:

    • 4 year Engineering degree in technology, physical sciences AND greater than 12 months experience at a comparable design commercial nuclear facility or greater than 21 months at a noncomparable design commercial nuclear facility

    • Professional Engineer (PE) AND greater than 12 months experience at a comparable design commercial nuclear facility or greater than 21 months at a noncomparable design commercial nuclear facility

    • Nuclear Navy Experience - Reactor operator, Propulsion Watch Officer, Engineering Watch Supervisor or Engineering officer of the Watch

    • Current or Previous RO/SRO license with greater than 1 year experience at a comparable (BWR/PWR) facility similar design or Greater than 18 months non-similar design at a commercial nuclear facility

    • Nuclear Operations Instructor - SRO Certification AND greater than 4 years of SRO-certified instructor experience

  • A high degree of manual dexterity and mature judgment

  • Strong mechanical aptitude

  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization

  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills

  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work

  • Demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing processes, regulations, responsibilities, and work environments


Specific Requirements

  • This role requires the use of weight rated equipment, with max ratings ranging from 275lbs to 325lbs, in order to meet the essential functions of the job.

  • Respirator Clearance/SCBA

  • Fire Brigade

  • Mandatory hearing protection program

  • Nuclear Pre-Access Drug Screen

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

  • Successful completion of pre-employment aptitude testing is required

  • Must be able to obtain nuclear access
