Position Overview:

This part-time (2x at 14 hours/week(.28 FTE); one at 20 hours/week (.39 FTE)) position is responsible for supervising the Access Services desk operations during the hours of 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.; including, but not limited to circulation of library materials and stacks maintenance. This position serves as the main point of contact during evening hours and must maintain excellent customer service with students, faculty, staff and the public. In addition, the Evening Supervisor is responsible for the safety and security of those using the building as well as security of the library collection.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and direct the work of student employees and support them in maintaining library services and standards. Assign and perform tasks associated with circulation of library materials and maintenance of stacks.
  • Assist in supporting and training student employees.
  • Answer questions in person and over the phone,
  • Direct patrons to locations in the library building.
  • Check in and check out library materials.
  • Explain loan rules, policies, fines, and patron records.
  • Maintain communication with other Access Services staff. Report problems encountered during shifts so appropriate action may be taken. Record problems/issues/information in Evening Supervisor reports.
  • Supervise library closing procedures to maintain security of the library collection when the building is closed.
  • Process material for exchange with St. Olaf, including retrieving items from the stacks.
  • Set-up and provide support for Athenaeum events.
  • Oversee and set up class film screenings in the library.

Additional Job Responsibilities
  • Implement emergency procedures as needed that deal with safety of library patrons and security of library collection.
  • Record Access Services statistical information, specifically evening gate and building use counts.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received and Exercised:
  • This position supervises student employees and may assist with student employee evaluations.


Education/Experience/Skills:

Required:
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills with a helpful service-oriented approach.
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, and ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff, and the general public.
  • Technological proficiency with demonstrated aptitude for learning new software and systems.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to use discretion and judgment in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to handle stress and emergency situations.
  • Must be dependable and attentive to detail and accuracy.


Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
