Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor - Poultry Diagnostician - Military Veterans

The College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota, invites applications for an outstanding tenure-track or contract (non-tenure) full time (100% appointment) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor in poultry diagnostics at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UMN VDL). The final rank and terms of appointment will depend on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate consistent with Collegiate and University policies.

The UMN VDL is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory that serves veterinarians, scientists, educators, companion animal owners and the livestock and poultry industry by identifying and monitoring emerging diseases and developing new diagnostic methods. The UMN VDL is also the official laboratory for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (MBAH).

The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide diagnostic pathology support to cases routinely submitted to the UMN VDL, and deliver comprehensive diagnostic case information in a concise and well-organized manner to the poultry industry, practicing veterinarians and other animal health professionals. The successful candidate is expected to develop close relationships with poultry veterinarians and producers using their skills and ongoing training to maintain and improve the health of their flocks. Expected service duties range from assistance with routine disease/health monitoring to in-depth case investigations. The ability to interact, communicate and collaborate with progressive practicing veterinarians and other stakeholders in animal agriculture is essential.

The person in this position will be involved in teaching and may have the opportunity to establish a collaborative applied research program in areas such as virology, infectious disease epidemiology, diagnosis, pathogenesis, control and eradication. Teaching may include participating in the DVM curriculum, in graduate and residency programs, and in educational outreach programs consistent with the expertise and interest of the candidate. The candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers and veterinarians.

This position may be located at any of the two VDL MN locations: the main location in St. Paul, or the Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory (MPTL) in Willmar MN, which is situated in close proximity to poultry production in Minnesota as well as private and UMN poultry research facilities. Being located in Willmar and working from MPTL is the preferred option. If the new faculty member is located in St. Paul, the faculty member is expected to work closely with the team at MPTL, visit the Willmar facility frequently, and support the poultry industry and the MBAH.

Required Qualifications:
DVM or equivalent degree.
At least two years of experience in poultry diagnostics.
Experience and ability to work with culturally diverse groups of people and excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
MS or PhD or equivalent degree in Veterinary Pathology, Disease Diagnostics, Veterinary Microbiology, Virology, Population Animal Health, or other related veterinary fields.
Working knowledge and experience with production animal medicine.
Experience in teaching veterinary students and/or veterinary pathology residents, graduate students and other trainees.
Pathology training and working experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
Board certification or eligibility by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or equivalent, and/or the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (ACPV).
Poultry field investigative experience (e.g. industry, regulatory or academic poultry field experience).
