Position:

The Department of Art + Design, Art History, Art Education invites applications for a tenure-track 9-month, Assistant Professor position in Ceramics beginning August 2025.

Qualifications:

MFA in Studio Art required. Qualified applicants will demonstrate expertise in ceramics with a broad knowledge of traditional and contemporary materials and processes and technologies.  Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in functional pottery, professional practices in ceramics, and contemporary craft. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to coordinate course content that includes hand building, throwing, mold making, human figure, clay and glaze formulation, equipment use and maintenance, and digital process. Candidates must be interested and conversant in interdisciplinary work and collaborate within the department, college, and university.  Applicants must show evidence of community outreach, a strong commitment to creative activity, teaching excellence, and service to the discipline and institution. The successful candidate will embrace and foster the educational needs of a diverse urban population. Teaching beyond the graduate teaching assistant level is preferred, while an active record of professional development is essential.  

Responsibilities:

Teach five three-credit classes (7-8 course units) per academic year at undergraduate and graduate levels as assigned. Coordinate the ceramics area regarding budget, procurement, and scheduling. Advise majors and student organizations, plus identify, hire, and oversee adjunct faculty in the area.  Maintain and oversee operation and use of manual gas kilns, automatic electric kilns, manual electric kilns, soda kilns, electric wheels, clay formulation and mixing, and glaze formulation.  Management and promotion of semiannual pottery sale. Participate actively in shared governance and service to the department, college and university.

The Department:

The Fine Arts facilities consist of well-equipped studios and labs for metals, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, illustration, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital and graphic arts. Other departmental resources include a comprehensive digital fabrication and rapid technologies lab, and two galleries.
