Director, External Scientific Partnerships, US Medical Affairs

This is what you will do:

The Director External Scientific Partnerships, US Medical Affairs is responsible for the execution of strategic initiatives with US-based health professional societies and associations within the US Medical Affairs organization. The Director will partner with TA Leadership teams, as well as with cross functional partners to develop, drive, and deliver the comprehensive strategic engagement plan for our rare disease portfolio. This includes professional society collaborations and partnerships, including societies HCP education and engagement with Key Opinion Leaders in line with US Medical Affairs overall strategic goals. This position will analyze, resolve, and communicate on key strategic external landscapes allowing for US Medical Affairs Leadership to make informed decisions that will contribute to the overall success of Alexion.

You will be responsible for:

Professional Society Partnerships:


  • Develop and manage the strategic relationships with US based scientific societies. Shape strategic approach to these external organizations and work internal cross-functionally to ensure buy-in and execution of the plans.

  • Work extensively with Alexion leaders across multiple departments including Early and Late R&D, RWE Generation, Global and In-Country Medical Affairs, Commercial, Public Affairs, Patient Advocacy, Market Access, and Clinical Operations to optimize Alexion interactions with the scientific societies and identify expanded areas for collaboration.

  • Develop and drive new digital initiatives with external organizations aiming to improve efficiency and agility and disseminate new practice change information to HCPs effectively.

  • Represent Alexion at key professional organization meetings and events focusing on areas of responsibility as well as bringing the right internal stakeholders to collaborate in specific projects.

  • Work with leading scientists, clinicians, and investigators to assess and expand partnership initiatives with scientific societies in alignment with TA strategies and Leadership Teams.

  • Strategically fund programs and activities through grants and sponsorships that support disease state education and policy issues aligned with business goals. Effective budget management is required.

  • Create and leverage relationships with external stakeholders to ensure robust physician and patient insights are available to drive a successful right-medicine-to-right-patient strategy.

  • Work alongside the Medical Affairs team to develop and execute the medical educational strategy to increase HCP confidence in our portfolio and to improve patient outcomes.

  • Deliver quality scientific discussion within education programs in line with medical strategy, incorporating important new clinical evidence, RWEs and guidelines pertaining to the current and future portfolio in the discussion where relevant and appropriate.

  • Other strategic projects as assigned.



You will need to have:


  • Degree in scientific discipline preferred (BS, MS, MD, PhD, PharmD)

  • At least 5 plus years of experience in the pharmaceutical field or alliance / partnership experience with large ESPO'S and External Experts

  • Knowledge in rare disease area and enterprise thinking and the ability to leverage synergies across products.

  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills with a proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse groups of people and audiences.

  • Ability to foster strong, compliant, productive, and value-added alliances.

  • Proven ability to establish and evolve relationships with scientific societies, other influential organizations, and external experts to advance science to meet the challenges in healthcare.

  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed environment with ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with many cross functional stakeholders.

  • Critical to have very strong interpersonal, public communication, and negotiation skills.

  • Knowledge of the drug development process and commercialization

  • Strong project management skills and substantive track record in working effectively with cross-functional teams.

  • Experience working in medical affairs.

  • Fluent in English

  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the social media space, business channels and advancing digital health

  • Solid understanding of the applicable regulatory environment and industry standards

  • Demonstrated, technical, organizational, project management, negotiation and budgeting capabilities and a self-starter with excellent ability to implement and execute.

  • This position will be Boston based.

  • 25% Travel anticipated.

  • The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment.
