Pay Range

 

$206,490 - $318,216 Annually

 

$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level

 

$247,800 - $318,216 Annually for the SEL.5 level

Job Description

We have an opening for an Initiation Systems Group Leader. You will be responsible for the design, development, testing, production oversight, and surveillance oversight of detonation and safing assemblies for LLNL nuclear weapons. You will manage employees and resources to accomplish technical and administrative requirements, interacting with all levels of management within, and external to, the Laboratory to establish a wide range of projects, develop budgets, and manage execution. This position has programmatic responsibilities in the Strategic Defense (SD) Program and line responsibilities in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED).

 

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

 

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

 

You will

 


  • Provide overall technical, safety, and security leadership to a multi-disciplinary group of engineers and technicians to ensure that programmatic milestones are safely met on schedule and within budget.

  • Supervise and provide administrative direction, guidance, support, mentoring, coaching, and promote teamwork for group personnel. Participate in performance reviews, peering, and salary management processes.

  • Monitor performance of personnel required to meet programmatic milestones and deliverables and lead corrective actions where necessary.

  • Collaborate with project principals and customers to market group capabilities and to define programmatic objectives, budgets, and schedules.

  • Review and approve engineering authorizations, specifications, drawings, and documents to ensure that reliability, explosive safety, and nuclear explosive safety requirements are met.

  • Direct special assignment activities in support of Strategic Defense (SD) Programs.

  • Serve as primary technical contact for the Program at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.

  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new staff as needed to meet programmatic needs.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.5 level

 


  • Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers with regard to Strategic Defense Programs.

  • Lead and develop advancements in cutting edge designing, modeling, and testing explosives that may have impact beyond the Laboratory.

  • Serve as organization spokesperson and senior technical expert for Laboratory management and/or as external advisor for sponsors and serve on external scientific or technical committees.



Qualifications


  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent level of education and related experience.

  • Significant experience and subject matter expert knowledge in designing, modeling, and testing explosive systems, designing either electrical or mechanical components and systems.

  • Effective organizational skills, and significant advanced level knowledge and experience with project management tools and techniques, including work planning, scheduling, cost estimating, analyzing and managing financial data, and project reporting.

  • Highly advanced communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors and to promote and maintain productive relationships across directorates, with other laboratories, and with other external entities.

  • Effective leadership, team building, interpersonal skills, and supervisory skills to lead personnel, write performance appraisals, and actively participate in peering sessions.

  • Working knowledge of Laboratory policies and practices and applicable NNSA orders.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Extensive experience and ability to lead and develop positions on cutting-edge technologies.

  • Extensive experience and expert technical knowledge to address advancements in designing, modeling, and testing explosives that may have impact beyond the Laboratory.

  • Extensive experience interfacing with NSE production agencies and the product realization process.

  • Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to lead a team, advise and influence senior management, and to positively represent the Program and the Laboratory.

 

Qualifications We Desire

 


  • PhD in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related field.

  • Knowledge of detonation physics, high-speed optical and laser diagnostics, and current areas of initiation systems research and development.

  • Significant experience with the operational and production processes related to the Kansas City Nuclear Security Campus, Pantex, Sandia National Laboratories, and Los Alamos National Laboratory sites within the Nuclear Security Enterprise.

  • Knowledge of nuclear weapon safety principles, NAP 401.1A, and DPBPS requirements.
