Community Sciences Lab Manager | Bard College - Military Veterans

Bard's Center for Environmental Sciences and Humanities (CESH) is seeking applicants for the position of Community Sciences Lab Manager. This position will maintain and cultivate ongoing student, faculty, and staff collaborations with communities across the Hudson Valley who are interested in environmental health, environmental justice, and the capacity to create resilience in the face of climate change using science as a tool to achieve these (visit our website for more information). Successful applicants will first be clearly oriented to community-based organizing and community science work, and then demonstrate a clear curiosity for and interest in learning more about scientific approaches to air and water quality. Because this position requires the management and maintenance of a field-heavy research/teaching laboratory and a broad network of air quality and water quality monitors, previous experience in field work and lab work greatly preferred (but not required). Our work is unique in that we privilege community-based scientific questions and needs above individual faculty research, which requires a unique scientific and community-oriented approach to this position. While we maintain high scientific standards in the field and in our lab, we are also dedicated to communicating with our collaborators and community leaders in terms that are accessible. This requires skills in translation and presentation (web content, social media content, talks, posters) that are designed to invite non-science folks into the questions. Demonstrated aptitude and/or previous experience in this sort of cross-disciplinary and/or cross-expertise communication is greatly encouraged as part of application. Job Duties Manage operation of community, faculty, and student-fueled community sciences lab (30%) Supervise ES/EUS Community/Lab Technician as they connect the CSL to ES/EUS faculty and courses Supervise student interns (3-5) in processing community science-provided samples W ork closely with other lab technicians and staff (chemistry, biology, physics, etc.) to maintain and purchase CSL inventory and equipment and facilitate collaboration/equipment sharing as needed Train community scientists (students, faculty, community members) as needed to support community science work Coordinate with other CESH staff to maintain a vibrant social media & web presence for CESH & CSL Support Bard Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) (and other potential intercampus collaborations) educational activities related to CSL work Manage Community Sciences Lab-supported sampling and data collection (40%) Maintain equipment and monitor data streams and from air and water quality observatories (SKWC, Kingston Air Quality Initiative (KAQI), Hudson Valley Air Quality (HVAQ) Project, Hudson Valley Library Air Quality Network) W ith support from the ES/EUS Community/Lab Technician and student interns, coordinate sampling days for watershed and air quality community members utilizing the CSL (Saw Kill Monitoring Program, Roe-Jan Monitoring Program, HVAQ, KAQI), including recruitment of volunteers, provision of sampling gear, quality assurance for sample handling and assays, and data collection Maintain data aspects of CSL web pages (validate and upload data) W orking closely with the CESH Executive Administrator, manage invoicing for lab services, ordering of supplies, and budgeting for CSL Perform and facilitate regular upkeep/maintenance of CSL equipment, inventory, protocols. and quality assurance documentation Community and student project support: (30%) With faculty advisors, support Bard student research projects (senior projects, summer research, internships) With the Center Director, other faculty, and community member support, perform data analyses for and construct reports for community members as needed With the Center Director, coordinate support for Saw Kill Watershed Community, HVAQ Project, the Hudson Valley Library Air Quality Network, and KAQI as needed (in-person and virtual technical support mainly) Serve as liaison between the CSL and community members with new science-based support requests Passion for addressing environmental issues, engaging with science and people W illingness to learn new instrumentation, protocols, scientific approaches Proficiency with computer programs including Excel Demonstrated leadership skills Ability to communicate to broad audiences about technical ideas Demonstrated time management skills Capacity to work effectively both independently and collaboratively Experience with water and/or air quality science (preferred) Experience with community organizing (preferred) Experience teaching and/or training students (preferred) Experience with data & database management, data analysis (preferred) Supervisory experience (preferred) To apply, please submit a cover letter, resumes, and a list of three professional references to Interfolio. Compensation: $55,350 This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting.
