Job Summary Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, provide intense moment-to-moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients. Under the general supervision of the Small Animal Anesthesia and Surgical Services Manager and faculty, identify staff training needs, provide necessary training, and develop, manage, and update training protocols and safety documentation. Evaluate staff performance, assist in writing and conducting annual evaluations, and, in collaboration with the Manager, provide coaching and disciplinary actions as required. Assess daily service needs, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, work schedule assignments, and equipment requirements. Set up and test specialized surgical equipment to ensure functionality prior to procedures, assist surgeons by scrubbing in as needed, and review surgical packs before OR setup to ensure all necessary equipment is available. Position patients according to surgeon specifications, circulate in the OR to provide technical support, and create standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment. Manage inventory and order supplies for specialized equipment. Work cooperatively with others to foster strong team commitments towards achieving Surgery services objectives. RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date. Acute hearing to discern heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope. Ability to transport patients on gurneys and move patients on and off gurneys and in and out of cages. Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Handle and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds. Contact with animals (sometimes fractious) as required. May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages and holiday shifts). Work schedule subject to change with prior notification. Fluctuating meal periods; work schedule does not allow a set meal period. Work in high traffic areas, confined, or small spaces, noisy environments and tolerate unpleasant odors. No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment or procedure rooms and some other areas of the hospital. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients. May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients. Work in other related areas on an as needed basis. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Minimum License/Certification: Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License. Minimum Education/Experience: Experience supervising staff in a small animal hospital, Veterinary specialty or emergency service setting. Experience in the use of various specialized surgical and diagnostic equipment and skill to trouble shoot equipment. Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA): Knowledge of common small animal surgical procedures, instruments used for various procedures, patient preparation. Skill to address and resolve conflict. Skills in leadership, organizational management and problem-solving. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preferred Education/Experience: Experience developing, implementing and managing technical SOP's, procedural SOP's and enforcing safety protocols and maintaining training documentation in a veterinary hospital setting. Experience assessing staffing needs and developing staff work schedules and assignments according to daily procedure schedules as well as long range service goals with flexibility. Experience in aseptic technique and circulation in an O.R. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA): Knowledge of VMTH policy and procedures.
