What You Will Do

The High Performance Computing Division's (HPC) mission is to provide production high performance computing systems to the Laboratory. Our work spans the early phases of development, acquisition, and production readiness of HPC platforms and continues to the maintenance and operation of these systems and facilities in which they are housed. Our portfolio also includes research and development of new technology and applications in high performance computing.

HPC is seeking a highly organized, self-motivated, and a proficient multi-tasker with a strong desire and capacity to learn to join our team as a Solutions Architect 4. The successful candidate should have a comprehensive understanding and wide application of operational activities and systems related to the operation and maintenance of High Performance Computing (HPC) Data Centers. This includes the operation of existing data centers; involvement in the planning and determination of both design specifications and performance requirements of new or upgraded state-of-the-art data centers that will serve the growing needs of the Laboratory for modeling, simulation, and artificial intelligence; installation of HPC systems and infrastructure; at-scale mechanical liquid and air cooling systems and medium voltage electrical distribution; ability to satisfy structural needs of 10,000 lb compute racks; safety/authorization/compliance basis; health, safety and environmental management; security; quality assurance and work control; equipment engineering; maintenance management; waste management; inventory control, materials purchasing, and packaging/ shipping/receiving activities; and document control/records management. The successful candidate will perform the full spectrum of tasks, including but not limited to:


  • Management of data centers which house the Laboratory's HPC infrastructure and supercomputing systems for the Advanced Simulation and Computing, emerging Artificial Intelligence, and the Institutional Computing programs.

  • Performing periodic reviews and assessments to ensure facility systems are operating properly and are being maintained within required limits.

  • Guide and mentor personnel while supporting data center electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Analysis and issue resolution regarding power and cooling systems serving HPC systems.

  • Respond to facility emergencies both during normal work hours and outside of regular business hours.

  • Coordinate equipment shutdowns, upgrades, return to service, and/or installations.

  • Monitor the operation of electrical and mechanical equipment supporting the facility and its critical operations.

  • Guide and Mentor with the preparation and/or review of lock-out/tag-out plans that ensure specific instructions for the isolation, containment, and/or de-energization of various mechanical and electrical sources according to established procedures and facility guidelines.

  • Perform duties consistent with LANL's commitment to a secure, safe, and healthy work environment.

  • Work occasional weekends, holidays, and overtime as required and be "on call" on a rotational schedule of 24x7 basis.

  • Perform basic maintenance tasks to the highest caliber, which includes climb ladders, work in confined spaces, lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs., etc.

  • Investigate mechanical needs of the data centers; make recommendations for mechanical and electrical system design, upgrades and modifications; and assist with the implementation of those. Independent judgment and latitude should be used throughout these processes/tasks.

  • Ability to recommend solutions for structural demands for up to 10,000 lb compute racks.

  • Interaction with institutional sustainability program to advise program on highest priority projects initiation, design and development.

  • Visit data centers to learn what works and what doesn't in design and operation of at-scale cutting-edge facilities.

  • Remain current on training for data center operations; participate in high-caliber collaborative opportunities involving HPC facilities.

  • Conduct reviews and participate in collaborative efforts to develop construction drawings.

  • Monitor the mechanical load and prepare forecasts of future loads to ensure that building systems are adequate, reliable, and meet projected computational load requirements.

  • Provide input associated with the supercomputer request for purchasing (RFP) process.

  • Develop optimal solutions to unique or complex problems with conflicting goals and objectives.

  • Establishes and manages the design, scope, schedule, and budget for group projects.

  • Partners with internal and external stakeholders to develop novel solutions and to identify and resolve technical issues.

  • Establish and improve work processes, protocols, and policies.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:


Technical Knowledge:

  • Extensive cross-discipline technical knowledge of engineering practices, processes, standards, procedures, and methods.

  • Ability to investigate mechanical and/or electrical needs of the data centers; make recommendations for system design, upgrades and modifications; and assist with the implementation of those modifications.

  • Extensive understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock out/tag out policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in accurately and efficiently diagnosing and repairing mechanical and/or electrical problems on multiple systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to use cutting edge software and technology, along with a variety of hand tools.

  • Demonstrated experience understanding and interpreting physical mechanical and/or electrical documents, blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.

Communication :

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience collaborating with all levels of organizations (i.e., operations personnel and supervisors, engineering, management, and outside contractors and entities).

  • Extensive understanding along with the ability of interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Conduct reviews and participate in collaborative development of construction drawings for HPC systems and facilities.

Leadership:

  • Substantial experience in identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining actions to be performed on problems affecting operations and management.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines.

  • Demonstrated experience as a leader and team player with good communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Travel:
  • Ability and willingness to engage in monthly business travel.
Education: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 15 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Postgraduate coursework may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:


  • Familiarity with classified environments and systems.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects at a time.

  • Certification in mechanical HVAC

  • Active "Q" clearance

Work Location :

The position is physically located at Los Alamos National Laboratory, which is in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in aneligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligibleposition as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
