Kinder Morgan is the largest independent transporter of petroleum products in North America, transporting approximately 2.4 million barrels per day. The great majority of these products are transported through our Products Pipelines business, which moves gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, natural gas liquids and condensate through about 9,500 miles of pipelines. We also have approximately 65 liquids terminals in this business segment that store fuels and offer blending services for ethanol and biofuels.

Primary Purpose: Coordinate safe and efficient transportation of refined petroleum products through the Kinder Morgan's Pacific pipeline systems in a safe and efficient manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Monitors pipeline conditions to detect normal, abnormal and emergency conditions.

  • Responds to normal, abnormal, emergency conditions and coordinates emergency response communications with local area personnel.

  • Reviews batch listings, batch tracking, schedules and pump orders to determine accurate timing of pipeline events (pumping's, deliveries, strips, etc.)

  • Advises Schedulers of containment and supply issues and any other problem that would affect operations.

  • Creates, updates, and distributes the pipeline Shift Instructions throughout duration of the 12hr shift, as needed.

  • Responsible for communicating critical information to field operations.

  • Responsible for monitoring pipeline startups and shutdowns and all pipeline changes

  • Instructs field personnel in conducting pipeline pressure tests when necessary to ensure integrity of the pipeline.

  • Coordinates maintenance and repair work between field and Control Center operations.

  • Receives and responds to calls from shippers during hours when schedulers are not on duty in order to adjust changes in volumes, suppliers and consignees of batches.

  • May assist or provide support for projects as necessary when not assigned to a specific console

  • Will be required to cross-train and operate on up to four different consoles as assigned, and/or train other Controllers as needed.



EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Process Technology degree, Information systems or Transportation a plus.


MINIMUM EXPERIENCE / SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE:

  • Some experience preferred

  • A Controller Training Program has been developed with the objective of developing the Controller candidate for Operator Qualification (OQ). The program will develop the Controller and help them understand specific OQ covered tasks that are essential to the Controllers daily responsibilities.

  • Advancement will be based upon minimum time requirements and meeting and maintaining satisfactory job performance standards. In other cases, advancement from one step to another will require a specific amount of knowledge be obtained and proven through the OQ process before advancement will be approved.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to respond effectively to changing schedules, priorities, and other urgent situations necessary.

  • The candidate must be able to multi-task, be proficient in reading and follow instructions.

  • Have a basic understanding of Control Room Management (CRM) and how it applies to a Controller's job duties.


In addition to the requirements listed above all Controllers, regardless of level, are expected to work with minimal direction, demonstrate the ability to analyze problems and develop sound recommendations for solutions, promote teamwork and act as mentors or trainers to less experienced Controllers & Field Controllers at all times.

  • Must have good math skills in order to accurately and quickly adjust to changing conditions

  • Independently plan and organize assigned work, inclusive of meeting all deadlines.

  • Identify, analyze and resolve a wide range of operational problems involving pipeline activities.

  • Remain calm during emergencies and formulate a course of action expeditiously.

  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook.

  • Well-balanced interpersonal skills and demonstrable verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be accountable and take direction from supervisors, keep required work schedules, focus attention on details, and follow job policies and procedures

  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential.

  • Time management skills

  • Must be a problem solver with the ability to find resolutions.

  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision.

  • This position requires considerable tact in dealing with a wide range of authority levels, both inside and outside the organization. Internal contacts include regional personnel, headquarters personnel, senior management, shipper representatives, etc. External contacts may include shipper / agency representatives, and the general public.

  • Consistently maintain a professional and respectful demeanor/attitude with co-workers, clients and vendors.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Physically perform the essential job functions as needed.

  • Able to work 12+ hours at a console in a secure room.

  • Able to work rotating shifts (days and nights).

  • May be required to workdays outside of normal schedule (up to 12 days)

  • Work is intensive at times and involves repetitive actions such as sitting at a computer, typing field instructions, inputting data on a keyboard, completing paperwork, logs, and teletype and telephone communications.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be willing and able to work 12-hour rotating shifts (including holidays and weekends) as well as scheduled and unscheduled overtime.

  • Subject to 24-hour call-out and call-back.

  • Subject to short notice call-back.

  • Schedule may change on short notice to meet business needs.

  • Able to work overtime as needed.

As an essential employee, you will be required to:

  • Stay in hotels close to the corporate headquarters due to local extreme weather events

  • Travel as needed for Disaster Recovers Drills or site-specific training.

  • May be required to relocate self (and family) for up to 12 days due to natural disasters to the Relocation site in Colorado Springs

*Company will cover all travel expenses, as necessary
