Position Title: Learning Specialist/Sr. Learning Specialist, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell School/Division: School of Medicine Office: Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Department of Academic Success Full Time/Part Time: Full-Time Description: Reporting to the Director of Academic Support, the Learning Specialist is a hands-on instructional role, focused on developing and implementing academic interventions to improve student academic performance and manage the accommodations process. In partnership with the Director of Academic Support, the Learning Specialist will provide academic counseling, education on learning strategies, and tools to face common challenges such as time management, organization, and test-taking issues. This position requires the use of independent judgment in planning, prioritizing a diversified workload, and discretion in regular communications with students, faculty, physicians, and administrators at Hofstra University, the Zucker School of Medicine, and Northwell Health. This position requires a flexible work schedule, including some early morning and late evenings to support extended student services. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Provides individualized academic support services, including consultations on study plans, academic skills, learning strategies, time management, school/life balance, etc. Provides academic support services to the medical student population, including co-teaching sessions in the curriculum on learning and study skills, conducting workshops, developing resources, and growing digital content to address current and emerging learning concerns. Provides academic support services to students experiencing academic difficulty, including in-depth advising on learning skills, study strategies, test taking, school/life balance, alternate paths to graduation, etc. Interprets professional psychoeducational evaluations and applies them in the form of learning/study strategy recommendations for students. Manages the applications for and implements disability-related accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ). Updates and maintains databases of records related to monitoring student progress, academic support services needed and provided, and related outcomes. Works closely with other student support services, course directors, and faculty members to triage students to all areas of support. Refers students to additional services as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Master's degree required. 3-5 years of related experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) and the ability to identify and solve problems is essential. Excellent knowledge of computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must have proficiency in public speaking and facilitating and conducting small and large group sessions with students. Must demonstrate cultural competence and the ability to work with students from diverse populations. Must be able to handle a busy caseload and spontaneous work demands while also overseeing long-term projects that require advanced planning. Must demonstrate a commitment to proactive student development, have a strong work ethic, be team-oriented and willing to collaborate. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in educational or cognitive psychology with specialization in learning and remediation preferred. Experience in medical education or other health sciences education. Familiarity with ethics related to FERPA , confidentiality, and other laws governing communication in an educational setting.
