Job Overview

Primoris Water and Mechanical seeks an experienced Project Engineer to join our growing team at our Charlotte, NC location. This technical role is primarily office-based, with moderate field support required at jobsites when necessary. Candidates with a background in piping, underground utility construction, process and utility equipment, mechanical building systems, or previous related engineering/technical support experience, are encouraged to apply.

As a Project Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in planning, coordinating, and executing projects safely, cost-effectively, and at high quality, working closely with Project Managers and Site Superintendents. This includes liaising with construction teams, vendors, subcontractors, and engineering firms; providing technical support and documentation; managing RFI's and design clarifications; as well as coordinating vendor and product submittals.

Additionally, you'll provide construction quality control through site visits when required, and may also assist with project forecasting, cost and productivity reports, and other related administrative tasks.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

  • Ensure that construction documentation and execution meet contractual, technical, safety, and quality requirements from clients, company, and industry specifications and standards.
  • Develop project submittals based on engineered specifications and drawings, review all submittals for compliance, transmit submittals to clients/owners/engineers, and initiate RFI's as required based on technical reviews.
  • Perform, or review and confirm, quantity takeoffs and develop material purchase requisitions.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and vendors, review and confirm quotations to complete procurement buy-out process in advance of jobsite mobilizations.
  • Provide technical support for construction planning, interpretation of design, application of construction methods, resolution, and documentation of design conflicts.
  • Collaborate with the construction team to ensure they have the necessary inputs, materials, documentation, information, quantities, and parameters to build the work.
  • Confer with engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to develop Value Engineering ideas to drive optimal project design, construction, and economics.
  • Perform various post-mobilization tasks such as material tracking/expediting; developing backup documentation for change order scopes; initiating construction logistics & execution plans for upcoming work phases within operational commercial facilities and campuses.
  • Travel as required, including but not limited to meetings, pre-bid walks, site visits, regular site construction support, training, etc.
Key Skills / Required Experience & Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management is preferred, but relevant experience will also be considered.
  • 5 to 15 years' experience in the construction or engineering industries as an Engineer/Project Engineer/Field Engineer/Assistant Project Manager, is preferred.
  • Salary/wage will be determined based on experience.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in heavy commercial/industrial, commercial, universities, aviation, hospital, or other campus-related projects and industries.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Microsoft Excel and Word, is required.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential to effectively communicate with team members, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
  • Ability to compose basic and complex technical documents.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills are required to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Regional travel may be required.
  • CAD experience is a plus.

Our Mechanical group serves the niche market of installing underground hydronic piping (chilled water, hot water, steam, and condensate) systems. Our Water group constructs water, wastewater, and reclaimed water treatment facilities throughout Florida and Texas with offices in Manatee, Lee, Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties in Florida as well as Houston, TX. We have been in business for over 30 years delivering construction and rehabilitation projects of water and wastewater treatment facilities through Design-Build, Design-Bid-Build and Construction Management at Risk contracts.
