Summary:

The Trauma Registrar/Outreach Specialist is responsible for complete, timely, and accurate data collection and maintenance of records for all patients who meet inclusion criteria for the Trauma Registry. This includes improving trauma care within the region through injury prevention and public education programs, continuing education for pre-hospital providers and other healthcare professionals. Standards for data collection are based on Cook Childrens Medical Center policies and procedures, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACSCOT) and Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) EMS and Trauma Registry. The Registrar will upload registry data to the regional, state and national registries as required and follow up on accuracy of the data. The Trauma Registrar is responsible for coordinating the quality review of abstracts entered into the registry. Responsibilities also include assisting with the annual report, conducting a variety of data analysis and reports, coordinating and preparing for survey by the American College of Surgeons. The Trauma Registrar/Outreach Specialist monitors the most common cause of injury through reports from the trauma registry and development of injury prevention programs to address those common mechanisms of injury. This position requires a background in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, data analysis and collection and relies heavily on diagnosis and procedure coding.

Education and Experience


  • High school diploma or equivalent required.


  • 2 years of experience with medical records coding and abstracting preferred.


  • Experience with the Trauma Registry is desired.


  • Experience with injury severity scoring preferred.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Must have computer skills including experience using Microsoft Excel and Word.


  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, effective written and verbal communication skills.


  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and trauma disease processes.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification

  • Certification as a Trauma Registrar preferred.
