Internal Job Number: P08036UF Description: Oregon State University's Hermiston Agricultural Research and Extension Center ( HAREC ) invites applications for a 9 month, full-time (1.0 FTE ), tenure-track Assistant Professor position. This position will be located at the HAREC , with an academic home in the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agricultural Sciences ( CAS ). This position has an assignment as a Resilient Agricultural Systems Extension Specialist with a statewide assignment. The primary purpose of this position is to develop and lead a nationally and internationally recognized research and extension program in horticulture that addresses current issues related to sustainable agriculture and development of resilient cropping systems. Areas of research specific to disciplinary and stakeholder needs may include those seeking to mitigate risk due to environmental stressors (e.g., drought, temperature, etc.) through the incorporation of new traits, crops, or management practices that promote beneficial soil functions and crop productivity (e.g., incorporation of new crops or varieties, irrigation, crop nutrition). A successful candidate will apply this knowledge to improve the region's ability to prevent, mitigate, prepare for and respond to climate perturbations resulting in more resilient agricultural systems and economies. The incumbent will develop an applied research and extension program to deliver research-based solutions to support sustainable farming that is based on clientele needs. Effective communication with key stakeholders is critical to the success of this position, as is cooperation and collaboration with clientele groups, staff and faculty at HAREC , Corvallis and other universities regarding crop production systems, research and extension projects, with emphasis on projects of particular interest to local and regional stakeholders. The incumbent must actively pursue outside funding sources through grants and other mechanisms to support their research and extension program. After year 3, the incumbent will be expected to fund an additional 2 months of salary from grants and contracts so it is necessary to be successful in obtaining extramural funding. It will also be critical to develop partnerships with colleagues to leverage funds and contribute to professional knowledge in crop production systems as well as student training and teaching. The incumbent will be directly responsible to the HAREC Director with input from the Horticulture Department Head. Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty): Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit. Requirements : PhD in Horticulture or related field. Demonstrated ability to contribute to scholarly activity evidenced by publications in refereed journals, books, and/or electronic media. Demonstrated applied research skills. Experience or strong potential to secure external funding for research and/or extension programs. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and cooperate within a team. Demonstrable ability to effectively communicate research findings in writing and verbally to stakeholders, the general public, policymakers, academics, and students. Demonstrated ability or significant potential for excellence in extension teaching other informal education delivery methods. Evidence of a commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Possess or be able to obtain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License within six months of employment and maintain it throughout employment. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months. This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030. Type: Duties include fieldwork that can require long hours (sometimes including weekends) and occasionally working under extreme heat or extreme cold conditions in remote field locations with rugged and uneven terrain.
