Interprofessional Nurse Educator | East Carolina University - Military Veterans

Job Duties: The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program ( ICSP ) at the Brody School of Medicine ( BSOM ) is seeking 2 part-time Nurse Educators to work 32 hours/week. Typical working hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm four days per week. Days can vary depending on scheduled classes and/or events. Minimal overnight travel may be required for mobile unit simulation events. Duties include: Simulation Curriculum Development (40 %) Lead the team in optimizing the simulation curriculum design and implement work flow according to best practices from the health care, education, and performance sciences. Lead the ongoing application of evidence-based principles from the science of training and performance to simulation program design and delivery. Work with the Assistant Dean and Medical Director to create simulation education programs to meet curricular requirements for Brody School of Medicine Collaborate with leadership from the BSOM Simulation Center, the ECU Health system, and university to align simulation-based training programs with institutional priorities of providing world class education, training and health care. Collaborate with ECU Health educators to address quality issues using simulation-based education Develop a robust system to evaluate simulation program outcomes. Oversee the collection of evaluation data on learning outcomes for simulation activities and collaborate with faculty to disseminate findings. Contribute to selected university and health system committees related to the development of curricula utilizing immersive methodologies. Collaborate with interprofessional and interdisciplinary faculty to develop simulation scenarios to promote student learning, critical thinking and clinical decision making. Instruction and Outreach (40%) Teach and facilitate interdisciplinary simulation sessions as needed using standards of best practice in simulation Participate in simulation scenarios to provide an interprofessional experience according to teamwork principles. Teach procedural skills to medical students and residents, such as ultrasound guided peripheral IV insertion, sterile technique, foley insertion, and others. Teach appropriate medications for medical interventions medical students and residents such as intubations, cardiac arrest, and others. Teach appropriate use of medical equipment medical students and residents, such as how to operate a defibrillator, IV pump, and others. Travel to regional locations to promote the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit capabilities and programs Plan, develop curricula, and facilitate simulation sessions at the BSOM Simulation Center and regional programs associated with the mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit and military simulation trainings. Work with ECU Health nurse educators to develop educational programs for quality improvement and ensure these programs are evaluated on an ongoing basis. Collaborate with ECU Health Science programs to create and teach interprofessional education simulation activities. Professional Development (20%) Lead and mentor staff in their professional development regarding curriculum design and delivery. Participate in selected university and health system committees related to faculty and staff development. Work with Assistant Dean and Medical Director to collaborate with and mentor faculty and staff from across campus in designing and implementing simulation-based curricula. Assist with faculty development and training related to the use of simulation. Collaborate with faculty and staff from across campus to advance the science of simulation-based training and assessment. Support and coordinate simulation-based research and scholarly activity. Promotes simulation best practices and initiatives established by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare ( SSH ) and International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning ( INACSL ). Minimum Education/Experience: Post-Baccalaureate degree required and at least one (1) year of experience; or a bachelor's degree plus at least three (3) years of experience. For both degrees, experience must be in clinical nursing and/or teaching experience in healthcare setting, clinical simulation setting or medical school or nursing school. An active Registered Nurse North Carolina License is required. Active licensure must be maintained throughout employment. Proficiency in Microsoft software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a track record of scholarly dissemination in presentation and publication form. The school was established in 1974 by the North Carolina legislature. BSOM's mission is to increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, to improve the health and well-being of the region, and to train physicians who will meet the health care needs of the state. The Department of Academic Affairs is responsible for leadership and managing all academic programming and assessment related to medical student education, resident/fellow postgraduate training, faculty development, and continuing medical education at the Brody School of Medicine ( BSOM ). The Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Program ( ICSP ) at the Brody School of Medicine ( BSOM ) provides access to simulation-based education for learners across the Health Sciences Campus and ECU Health Medical Center. The program collaborates closely with ECU Health Medical Center in offering educational activities to Graduate Medical Education, EastCare, and other hospital staff. The mission of the Clinical Simulation Program is to promote excellence in clinical care, promote patient and learner safety, and improve multidisciplinary team performance using simulation modalities. The ICSP is a fully accredited program by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. A 20-room 7,500 sq. ft. Clinical Simulation Center is located adjacent to the hospital on the first floor of the Brody Health Sciences Building. A new 30,000 sq ft Simulation Center is under construction as part of the new Medical Education Building (opening Fall 2027). The ICSP also has a mobile Healthcare Simulation Unit, a 44-foot specialized vehicle that provides simulation education throughout the region.
