Job Summary:
The Health & Safety (H&S) Specialist is responsible for effectively leading the implementation and execution of the company's H&S Strategy placing a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and proactive measures. Leads and drives a progressive approach to H&S by sustaining or enhancing local practices, processes, tools, and training programs needed to ensure total effectiveness of the area's H&S management system. Actively engages and works with management within the sites to leverage cultural changing elements of the H&S program, while engaging the workforce to create and sustain a H&S culture that continuously strives to achieve zero losses within the sites. Supporting management and recommending appropriate action to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. All other duties as assigned by management.
Responsibilities:
- Provides coaching and subject matter expertise to the site's management in all matters related to H&S including all potential losses.
- Performs as an integral member of the site's management team and leads the site in the execution of H&S strategy.
- Promote Continuous Improvement Culture and Cross Functional Teams.
- Assists with the oversight of the site's H&S management system and of processes and programs to ensure continuous improvement as well as regulatory and company compliance.
- Continually engages salary and hourly employees to ensure the desired H&S behaviors are being demonstrated at all levels of the organization.
- Assists with minimizing losses including, but not limited to, assist with managing workers compensation claims, property damage, business interruption, and unexpected costs.
Basic Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree, preferably, (but not required) in H&S related field, or equivalent experience and training, is preferred.
- Professional certification such as Certified Mine Safety Specialist, or Certified Safety Professional, is a plus.
- Minimum five years of progressive H&S experience, preferably in a mining, manufacturing or construction environment.
- Experience with MSHA, Cabinet for Health Services (Radiation Branch) or other similar regulatory agencies is required.
- Become a qualified MSHA (part 48) instructor, required within 2 years of hire.
- Proficient computer skills and working with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is a must.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities appropriately.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Experience working with employees who are part of a unionized labor force.
- Must be able to support a continuous improvement environment as well as change management initiatives.
- Able to travel regularly to cover assigned locations.
- Able to develop and conduct training programs.
- Excellent organization, conflict resolution, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, challenge status quo, and initiate change.
