Part Time Faculty - Communication Studies | Highline College - Military Veterans

The Highline College communication studies department is actively looking for part-time communication studies faculty to teach primarily be for in-person and hybrid courses on our main campus starting the 2023 - 2024 academic year. The Communication Studies & Journalism department is a small but influential department offering classes like introduction to communication, public speaking, interpersonal communication, news writing, and mass media, as well as 300 level general education courses for Highline's Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degrees including Presentation Skills and Organizational Communication. The department additionally runs the Public Speaking Center on campus. Salary will depend upon the number of classes taught. Salary is based upon initial placement, work experience, and the number of assigned credits. The current salary range per credit hour is $1,153.31 to $1,234.67 Please review the current collective bargaining agreement for additional information (See 205 Part-time Faculty Placement and Salary). Thank you for your interest in Highline College. SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Teaching : Teach courses in the Communication Studies Department . Teaching assignments will primarily be for in-person and hybrid courses on our main campus in Des Moines, WA . Having online teaching experience is a bonus. Service : Engage in department, division, and college initiatives. Professional development : Maintain competence in teaching and the discipline through professional development activities. FACULTY-WIDE SKILLS AND ABILITIES At Highline, successful faculty applicants demonstrate the ability to: Show commitment to student learning. This includes planning, organizing, and creating an interactive, cooperative, and mutually respectful learning environment, incorporating research-based practices to teaching and assessment. Challenge learners intellectually. This includes encouraging students to ask questions, confront limits, recognize complexities, think critically, and challenge assumptions. Practice culturally responsive instruction. This includes designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment that are relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline. Communicate effectively . This includes conveying information and expectations clearly, listening carefully, encouraging students to communicate, and acting with respect, enthusiasm, and empathy toward students. Demonstrate personal and professional integrity . This includes, but is not limited to, being professional, honest, and ethical in the selection and delivery of course content. Assessment . Ability to assess student-learning outcomes and use assessment data to modify instruction. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Master's degree (or higher) in Communication Studies or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution (pending degrees must be verified by a letter from the granting institution). DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS : Community college teaching experience. Education or Professional experience in Public Speaking, Introduction to Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Leadership. Demonstrated experience working with students from a diversity of backgrounds . Academic training or experience in assessment and curriculum design .
