Engineer II - Robotics - Military Veterans

The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1979 to conduct basic and applied research in robotics technologies relevant to industrial and societal tasks. Seeking to combine the practical and the theoretical, the Robotics Institute has diversified its efforts and approaches to robotics science while retaining its original goal of realizing the potential of the robotics field. The facility includes approximately 100,000 square feet at the main Pittsburgh campus, another 100,000 square feet at the National Robotics Engineering Center in Lawrenceville and growing.

Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute is searching for an Engineer II to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by assisting in moderately complex engineering work requiring commonly employed technical knowledge related to the design, testing, installation and modification of equipment, or processes, or structures. Works with other engineering disciplines in the development and application of research or products

Responsibilities:

  • 20% Conduct research in robot autonomy, motion planning, and control.

  • 20% Serve as a team leader for communications team working on building search and rescue robots for subterranean environments.

  • 20% Test the developed robotic systems in fields and evaluate performance

  • 40% Contribute to the research, design, development of robots including both unmanned aerial and ground vehicles.

  • Develops, modifies and maintains operating protocols/procedures and related technical documentation.

  • Identifies operating or installation problems. Recommends design modifications and or new applications for equipment.

  • In consultation with project managers and other researchers or engineers contributes to the technical design and development of components and equipment used in research and development.

  • Tests and analyzes the feasibility, design and operation and performance of equipment and components.

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Master's Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Robotics and knowledge of research techniques or equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Direct robotics experience.

  • Strong understanding of common mechanical engineering practices and standards.

  • Strong understanding of sensor, actuator, and control system.

  • Hand-on experience on mechatronic system design and development.

  • Complex mechanical systems engineering experience to include module breakdown, documentation, requirements analysis, design reviews, implementation, testing, results analysis.

  • Proficient in mechanical and/or electrical CAD.

  • Ability to work in a field team environment to run organized tests with robotic vehicles including ground, aerial and surface

  • 3-5 years engineering design process experience.

  • 3-5 years engineering experience.

Skills:

  • Robotic vehicle/architecture experience; programming in Python and matlab

Certifications:

  • PE - Professional Engineer License - National Society of Professional Engineers

Trainings:

  • OSHA Hazardous Materials Safety Training
